Selvedge Quilt

2 Attachment(s)
I have finally finished the binding on this Selvedge Quilt. I used only plain (non word) selvedges for both the background and the knots. Even the binding is made from the smaller pieces of selvedges. Will make a lovely pet blanket as it is quite thick.

I never tire of working with selvedges, both word and plain. I have so many projects in mind and thank goodness as I have a huge stash at hand.

Great quilt! Very "edgy"!

AUQuilter 07-01-2018 02:06 AM

Creative use of the selvedges!

Blueridgebeverly 07-01-2018 04:00 AM

Your quilt is gorgeous. I don’t save selvedges. I’ve been passing them to a friend along with scraps. She uses them for dog shelter beds. Maybe I should hang onto the selvedges!? Questions.....do you cut the selvedges off in one big piece before you cut the fabric for other purpose? Or just cut them off as you go? Do you sort and store by color as you go? Interesting quilt!

I cut off the selvedge as I use the fabric but I use lots of scrap fabrics so I rely on friends and lovely quilters to keep their selvedges and send them to me or I buy them online. I do try and keep the plain selvedges and word selvedges separated but it doesn't always happen. I have them in bags which I can grab and take to our fishing cabin so I can sew on the verdandah.

Very cute! It would be a nice table topper for a couple "tying the knot" .:D

Sandee 07-01-2018 05:53 PM

That's awesome! Maybe too cute for a pet? Or a very lucky pet will be very happy to snuggle up on it!

Ariannaquilts 07-01-2018 06:06 PM

I just love the things you do with selvages Lynnie, I tried saving mine and then everything gets cluttered and in the bin they go. If I think about it I cut the selvages off before I make any cuts but sometimes I forget.

Wow, great idea,

Jingle 07-01-2018 08:24 PM

Love your knots, and that you are making use of your selvedges. Very cool.

I enjoyed seeing your selvage quilt. You could play i-spy with the many colors and patterns. I especially like the selvage binding!

Karamarie 07-02-2018 03:36 AM

I use my selvages for tying things. Most recently I used some to tie up my staked tomatoe plants.

Aunt Annie 07-02-2018 03:52 AM

How did you finish the sides?

Phyllis42 07-02-2018 10:18 AM

Love it. Love it. Love it. I usually cut off just the selvedge because I want ALL of my fabric. :) Some people want like 2" of fabric when they ask for the selvedge. Just love the knots ... first thing I thought of was a road for match box cars. :)

JanieH 07-02-2018 11:38 AM

Love your quilt and the thought of "tying the knot". I have to admit my first thought was a pretzel but then it is past 2 p.m. here and I just realized I haven't eaten anything - so I guess my first thought was food related!

retiredteacher09 07-02-2018 03:22 PM

Beautiful!

The sides of the knot sections do you mean - they are fused onto the background and then machine appliqued in place. I have then quilted around close to the knot to make it stand out.

ccthomas 07-02-2018 06:22 PM

Nice selvage quilt.

Lynnie...this is very cool. Really like it...

Thank you for the photo! That is quite a collection! Do you piece by hand?

jmoore 07-03-2018 02:42 AM

Yes, very creative and fun pattern and your colorful selvages make it whimsical. Great job.

Perfect idea for selvedges! And perfect execution. Love this quilt!

Beginner10 07-05-2018 06:13 AM

I also thought of pretzels when I saw your quilt. Beautiful! Is this a easy pattern??

Yes it is, the knots were foundation pieced with fabric scraps in sections and then joined together and fused into place onto the background and machine appliqued in place.

Darcyshannon 07-06-2018 12:37 AM

Made me realize I need to make my "little man" a quilt to nap on since he stays with me while I am sewing.

Judith1005 07-23-2018 03:57 PM

Oh Lynnie, this is a beautiful work of art. I never thought of saving the non-word part of selvedges. (I only save the word part.) After seeing your creation, I might have to rethink that.
