Here is the mariners compass I made for my husband after he completed my sewing cabinet. I'm not happy with it...too many mistakes and uneven borders. I told him to use it as a blanket on our sailboat and I'll make him a better one from batiks. I learned a lot about paper piecing and also learned I'm not going to do my own design again!

Beautiful!

Well to be honest I can't see a thing wrong with it!!! I think you did an awesome job on it....

Beautful!
|
You are too hard on yourself. I love it and can't see anything wrong with it. Not that there's anything wrong with making him another...
|
I'm sorry you aren't happy with your quilt, because I think it's stunning. Your use of color is just amazing!I can't help but think that you'll be much happier with it once you have it quilted.
|
Why dont you let the gift recipient decide? It is a shame to give someone something this nice and then tell them you don't want them to use it in the house! Surely it would get ruined on the boat?
|
Awesome

It will be fine on the sailboat. We have two sleeping berths that are clean and cozy. I'm backing it with novelty sailboat fabric.
I made it because he's wanted one for years. I'll improve on the next one. |
Your quilt is beautiful, I can't see anything wrong with it. I think we're all kind of critical of our own work because we want it to be perfect for whoever is receiving it. Where can I find that pattern? I'd like to do it for my dad.
|
Don't be your own quilt police! It is gorgeous and I know what alot of work you put into it.
|
The pattern is from Carol Doak's Mariner's Compass Stars. I used pattern #8 called Denmark. I blew up one of the copies to do the big block and then made the other blocks the normal size. Then I messed around with it on the design wall until I had some pleasing combinations. I have 5 books on compasses and liked hers the best because I didn't have to do curved seams. It also comes with a DVD for your computer. Next time I'll try a variety of blocks to make a scrappy looking group of compasses from batiks.
My husband is so excited about sailing and this has a lot of meaning for him. |
It is lovely. Good color scheme.

I think you came up with a very dramatic layout for the MC blocks, and the maroon and black makes a great border. It definitely attracts your attention (in a very good way).
|
I don't see any mistakes. It's beautiful!
|
Don't be so hard on yourself, I think it's lovely! :D

What mistakes....I can't see any! And I bet the hubby doesn't see any either. Beautiful job and great pattern and colors. My bet is he will not put this one in the boat! He will show it off at home and be very proud of it!

This is so handsome! I think once it's quilted you'll like it even more and those "mistakes" will just disappear into the quilting. It's very striking! No quilt police here!
