This was my grandma's sewing machine. My mom and I sew, but she didn't want it, so she said I could have it.
Where do I find the serial number on this machine? |
Lucky you! Can't help you on the serial #, but hopefully someone else will.
|
mine is a 403, simular to this one. look on the bottom under where the needle goes up and down. should be on that side of the bottom. that is where mine is anyway. hope that helps
|
Wow, lucky you! That one is on my wish list. The serial number should be where the previous poster indicated.
|
found it - thanks!
It's a 503 Slant-O-Matic. I've got all the manuals, attachments, cams. So excited. I'm remodeling my sewing room right now, so I'll make a spot for it during the remodel. |
I have one just like that. Good machine. I bought mine in 1963 brand new and it still works perfect. They say it is a workhorse.
|
I have two of those. I gave one to my DIL and she dearly loves hers. She named her Margaret after her grandma. Says she is old but fashionable for her time and gets things done.

I think I'll name it after my grandma too, in honor of her. 1963 was the year I was born...so that's extra special for me. |
Lucky you. I have the exact same one purchsed by my mother in '63. It is the machine I learned to sew on. Enjoy!
|
I have 1 just like it. My Aunt bought it new in 69 and used it very little. Sews like a dream. Lucky you.
|
Don't know where you'll find the serial number, but once you do, the Singer Company will not just tell you what you have but also the day it was made!
|
Nice
|
So different looking. Love it.
|
my sewing machines serial number is on the back side of the machine on the right side. But mine's not a Singer like this one. Good luck
|
The date that Singer lists is not the "Made on" date, but the date that the batch (of which it is one) was commissioned. The actual date is unknown and could likely be several months later.

The 503 and it's "big sister" the 500 were sometimes referred to as "Rocketeers" It's easy too see why.....the way they look!

I KNOW they are the same size. The 500 is the more expensive TOL machine and the 503 is just slightly less "sophisticated" . They are also almost like the 401 and the 403, just with a more updated "dress". The only difference is in the bobbin winders.

Your machine is beautiful. I have been looking at the 500A's but now that I have a 401A, I'm happy.
Enjoy your new machine. |

Cool! I would love to have had one of my GM's machines!
I saw one like this one at a yard sale yesterday. It was in a nice cabinet, had 2 boxes of attachments and looked to be in great condition. She wanted $100. for it. I have no idea if that is a good price or not, but I didn't buy it. If anyone is interested...I can tell you where it is...(if you are around Middleton, TN) |
Hi...looks just like the one I recently purchased in an estate sale. The model number is under the hood across the light bulb on the right hand side. tilt machine over or just bend down & there it is...mine is a Model 503A.
Happy sewing!Kayrn |
How wonderful is that to get your grandmother's machine from the same year you were born. Looks like a real good machine.

This is a GREAT machine. Mama had one, I had it but gave it to a friend who had made a set of drapes with a needle and thread because she had no sewing machine. Mama would have wanted her to have it. I don't miss it because I know it is being used and I have three great machines to use.
(As I recall, this machine cost about $500 back when that was REAL money, early '60s.) |
WOW..so nice for you. Have fun sewing on this little special machine
|
It is so nice to have a machine passed down to you. I have one of my Grandmother's machines too. It is extra special.
Your 503 is very nice. I have one and also the 500. They are really fun to sew on. Pat |
congratulations. you'll make beautiful quilts together!:)
|
I just recently purchased a 503 off Craigslist for $100. Mine is in a cabinet with 3 drawers, has a buttonholer, zigzagger, and many cams and feet. I love it! I cleaned it and oiled it myself, but am not sure if I did a good job or not. It seems to be a little noisier than I thought it would be.

it is under neath on the side............
|
thanks all - found the serial #. It's so nice to know that I have something "special" to remember my grandma by.
She gave me my first sewing machine when my daughter was 2 years old. I was making a halloween costume for my daughter and I went over to my mother's house to use her machine ... well when my grandma heard about my renewed interest in sewing, she called me to her house and gave me a brand new machine. She said she bought the machine years before and had planned to give it to her first grandchild that took an interest in sewing....well that was me! |
Wooohoooo! That is a great one. Enjoy!

My home-ec. teacher could do monograms and beautiful embroidery on pillowcases with this machine. She did not let us young kids use it. Later I got to use one and I think the thread just dances through them--beautiful stitches!
