I am using the bolt cardboard that has the wing-flaps... the ones that are the waffle center are not worth cutting (You can use them as "shelves" (I have one separating my up/down layers)

I am just using an Xacto craft knife and cutting the 11.75" lengths (most of these are approx. 7.5 inches wide, so its saving me from having to cut width too) ... a couple are cut at 11.5 or 11.25, but for the skinnier WOF (like a few quilters flannels I have) I use those. then when I run short, I cut 4.5 lengths and then shorten that to 6.5 heights when I have a good stack of them.

I have actually found that since I had them folded 2-stacks side-by-side before, and now I'm adding the cardboard, it is actually taking up a little more space... BUT I can see all the fabrics. AND I can access all the fabrics easily without getting a hernia by lifting a big stack... best of all? It just feels great to be organized!!! I will KNOW if I have any yardage left of this/that

Thanks, he's my favorite sewing / snuggle buddy... we have 5 total, they are as addicting as quilting :)

greenini 02-17-2011 10:48 AM

Cool, thanks, I tried splitting the waffle ones since that's all I had and I did use up the 3 that I had so 2 tall ones and 8 small ones are wound. Even that is great. I will look for the others next time I'm at the store.

Ritacarl 02-17-2011 11:49 AM

May you live long enough to use every last yard!!!!

dinlauren 02-17-2011 02:00 PM

Wow, it's looking good. I can't wait till I can get in my sewing room and get some shelves up so I can get organized. I don't have nearly the stash you do but maybe one day I will. LOL

ann clare 02-17-2011 02:06 PM

Looking good

Jennifer22206 02-17-2011 02:23 PM

Its now really starting to fall into line... it feels great! Of course I got a call today and was reminded a friend of my hubby's ~ well, his mom's retirement party is Sunday. Yikes, I forgot! But the good news is, I can now FIND the fabrics I wanna use to make her something quickly... retirement after 25 years... gotta think fast. She does crochet, so I was thinking a couple matching fabric baskets to hold her yarn/WIP... or a totebag to take it on the road...

Here's the progress as of this afternoon, my back aches horribly, so I gotta stop for today. Ugh, where's my Excedrin!?

overview of how its starting to look (I used my phone to take the pics, sorry for the cruddy pic quality)

Licensed / Holidays / Snowmen now happily together :)

Using the larger bolt boards for anything over 1.5 yards... if its less, I use a small mini wrap (removed the minis for now, so I can color-sort them all)

WIP stack ~ yeah, I'm finding all my UFO's and WIP's!

mass yardage ~ got them all together for quick choices on quilt backs :)

and looky here, I found a UFO I must have started 7 years ago... gonna have to finish it, it was my first attemp at raw-edge applique, and I used the heavy duty Wonder Under, so cannot stitch edges of flowers... oh well, time to play with the paints then :)

made skinny mini bolts to wrap my different interfacings on, major consolidation! (I do machine embroidery, so I have many different interfacings that I need)

Glad I do not have a large stash.

BizzieLizzie 02-17-2011 04:25 PM

That is looking great! Now you can go right to where you want without tripping up! Fantastic! Wish I had your space. Enjoy!

Maia B 02-17-2011 04:33 PM

Great work! Keep on plugging! A sincere thanks for sharing this process with us.

awf60 02-17-2011 04:40 PM

You are brave to post and share your room. It helps all of us! I personally told myself, NO MORE FABRIC until I get the projects done I have planned.

fabric whisperer 02-17-2011 04:55 PM

this solarium is actually very small... we have been here for 16 years... I have sewn garments for that long for my kids (they are now 11-25 years old). This room has been a playroom for kids, then my graphic design studio, now my sewing lair. Of course it got so bad the sewing machine is now on a table in the livingroom just so I can work on projects.

The solarium is only 9x8 so I have to utilize all the space very wisely. When I am done, I am hoping to have accomplished three goals:
All fabrics organized and routed thru;
all WIP / UFO's found and decide what to keep/eliminate; and
room for 2 machines to be setup, one for piecing, one for embroidery... with ample space to swap machines for serger when I need to do clothing.

I will still have to have the big table setup in the livingroom when I am doing final quilting, tho, this room is too small to work on a big quilt!

Quiltntime 02-17-2011 05:01 PM

You need to open a quilt shop.

Nettie Phillips 02-17-2011 05:42 PM

I know how you feel. Mine is just about that bad.

Pam H 02-17-2011 06:01 PM

Seriously? 2000 yards of fabric? I might have 20. My sewing room is so boring compared to this.

JUNEC 02-17-2011 06:04 PM

Wow - just awesome - I are making me quilty about the shape my sewing room is in - Love your shelves

grammy17 02-17-2011 06:13 PM

Wow. I'm almost embarrassed to call myself a quilter. I only have about 3 shelves full of fabric. And 3 drawers and a box or two--all kinds of fabric. The rest of my 9x10 room is computers and machines. Oh yes, and a couple shelves of books and music from when my passion was playing the dulcimer.

Mrs. Mel 02-17-2011 06:19 PM

What a fantastic job you have done. I have been doing the same thing tonight; but I'm not even CLOSE to the yardage you have. I have been putting my fat quarters in clear 'shoe box size' totes. You have some great fabrics. (Makes me want to shop for more!!!) :-D

Margie 02-17-2011 06:56 PM

I see some PITTSBURGH STEELER FABRIC there!

Dulcimer? Cool ~ I just surprised my hubby for his 45th birthday with an autoharp, as he played one in elementary school... we are a musical family, ranging from piano to flute to percussion to autoharp & panpipes, plus a talented violist :) Learning sitar and dulcimer are on my bucket list

 (caught)   yup, we're major Steelers fans, Lambert was a friend of the family years ago when my mom worked with players... bled black-n-gold since the 70's  I got cotton of all the prints, and fleeces too... just got the gold newer print (the one that looks distressed) and the black will be the backer, but black Kona & the distressed gold print will be the front... using Carpenter's Wheel (star) pattern... it will be started as SOON as this room is in order yippee, so see?!?!? I have a great incentive!!!

Quilted Horse 02-17-2011 07:36 PM

Wow!!! Looking good. THose shelves would be great. I bought 4 pattern cabinets when my local Joannes moved a few years ago. They work great for holding stabilizers, unfinished projects, etc. I use them for everything but fabric and patterns! lol NOt sure if this is true, but someone told me that Monday night at 8pm on OWN there is a hoarder show featuring a quilter! I plan to watch and see how they get organized. I could use a few tips!!!

rslindiana 02-17-2011 08:52 PM

You all make me feel so much better about my room. Thanks for letting me know I'm normal! :o)

biscuitqueen 02-17-2011 09:28 PM

you did a great job on your room, but your making the rest of us look bad

AnnieH 02-17-2011 11:38 PM

You're doing a great job. 2000 yards is mind blowing. How are you going to stop yourself buying more?

cheryl rearick 02-18-2011 10:55 PM

how fun looking, very nice and such beautiful colors, For sure you will have a great time.

jackied 02-18-2011 11:27 PM

Oh my gosh, had to laugh. That first photo looks so much like my room. On top of all my quilting I have put many things I had no where else to put. I need soooo much to organize like many of you gals are doing. I cannot even sew in my room.

jajudd24 02-18-2011 11:51 PM

OMG.....will you ever use it all?????lol

No. One Meme 02-19-2011 12:04 PM

I finally ordered the "Quilting for Dummies". In the book she describes how to organize. I love the part where she states taking over the guest bedroom and sending the guests to a motel. That is me. Organizing for quilts is like an artist getting paints mixed for a canvas. You are doing a wonderful job. Your fabrics & colors are great! You are an artist. Now, let's see how many quilts can be finished before we all go blind. lol Have a grand day.

Iamquilter 02-19-2011 05:48 PM

Great job, I've started to wrap my fabric on boards also, but have some project to do right now that I need to get done for customers so will have to wait a little longer before I continue .
