Ok, so I saw how alaskasunshine organized her beautiful stash, and I think she made a lot of us feel uber-guilty about our wrecks ~ so I cannot afford all the boards right now, so I am making daily trips to my local store at the end of the day... they recycle the bolts anyway, so I am cutting them down with an Xacto to size... great stiff cardboard! :)

After numerous "hide it!" episodes when family came over during the holidays, my room was totally out of control... I couldn't stand it! Everything would get quickly tossed in and the french doors shut. Well, its got to be organized for me to work!

I am way too embarrassed to show the whole room and how totally bad of a wreck it was... but here is a quick idea. It was BAD... but I am working on the reorganization, and I am getting soo excited! It's very liberating!

We had a LQS close about 3 years ago, and they had a set of 6 custom-built bolt shelves... well, I bought those along with yards and yards of fabrics... so I have two of them in my solarium, and they are working perfectly! After the initial cleaning, I may have room to bring 2 more of the shelving units up, I just cannot quite get to the far side of the room yet...

So here's my progress so far...

some of the original train wreck... even my Grace frame had to be hidden from guests coming over... I am so embarrassed it got that bad!

ahhh... how liberating to be organized!

oh, I forgot I had about 1/2 of these fabrics... enough excitement to start planning 20 more quilts YIKES

yum, its such a pretty rainbow forming :)

all my YARNS are now organized (up top in boxes) and protected from dustbunnies!

I keeps shifting as I get "another shelf done"... I have wrapped over 500 yards already, and probably have at least another 1500 yards to go... still have numerous stacks and sterilite under-the-bed bins that aren't even touched yet... oh, it will bo soooo great when done! Thanks alaskasunshine for encouraging us!!!

Ah, nice and as you go along you will find yourself reorganizing and fine tuning it!!

Cherylsea 02-16-2011 09:50 AM

It looks like you have made a great start and have a bunch of wonderful fabrics. Keep going even if only "some" each day.

fabric whisperer 02-16-2011 09:56 AM

OMG this is a LOT of work, but very soul-cleansing at the same time :) I forgot how many Debbie Mumm's and KP kids I had... I've unearthed quite a few fabrics that I forgot I had! (Or didn't realize I had "that much yardage"... But I am tickled that I got to the far cubbies, as I had my mass-yardage pieces stacked over there, from the LQS buyout... I have 7 quilt tops that are done being pieced, and now I have great choices for the backers :) yippee!! I am spending a couple hours each day on it... the progress really starts to come together quickly!

sylviak 02-16-2011 10:00 AM

Love your shelves! It's really beginning to look great...keep up the good work and "inspire" some more of us!

wolph33 02-16-2011 10:08 AM

Lynnejean 02-16-2011 10:09 AM

congratulation on doing a really good job! Keep at it and keep posting pictures of the progress!

Jim's Gem 02-16-2011 10:53 AM

It's looking better. You're doing a great job!! Keep up the good work!
I got a "new" sewing area about 2 years ago and I really try to keep it cleaned up. I have found that I have a hard time working in there when it's a mess. Plus it is my Family room, so I can't let it get really really messy. I have all my fabrics organized. Sure makes it easier to find the fabrics I may want to use in my quilts. Of course, I have overflowed my cabinets and shelves and have a few (a dozen or so) large rubbermaid totes in the garage. Those are real neat so I can quickly see what's in them.

luv-e 02-16-2011 10:57 AM

You poured the guilt on me now lol lol lol
I try...DH home today...Maybe he can move some boxes for me[ not able to move them].... He is napping now...Should I go wake him?????????????????? This is why I'm on the computer..I can't get to my sewing rm :-(

isnthatodd 02-16-2011 11:07 AM

I am absorbing all your good ideas, so when I get to do mine in June (or at least get started) then it might go faster.

feffertim 02-16-2011 11:07 AM

wow, lovely fabric, I would never leave my sewing room

miss_ticky2 02-16-2011 11:12 AM

wow...did you say you bought just the bolt shelves...or all the fabric that was on them as well??? lol. But seriously, you are doing a wonderful job and will be able to stitch up a storm when you've finished :)

haa haa  I bought all 6 shelves ~ plus about 600 yards of their great fabrics... Got KP Kids, Shamash & Sons, southseas, Debbie Mumm, Andover, and sooo much more... those shelves are about 7 feet tall, and they are made to hold the bolts... so with my "half bolts" I get the two rows... but when I can finally get to the lower cubbies, I will have one cubby to hold my bolts (they just go "wherever" right now haa haa)

I have just hit the motherlode with some Halloween kids prints I forgot I had... I got too many ideas swimming thru my head for new quilt ideas now  bad, bad, bad, keep on task, gotta organize... no sewing today... BEHAVE! (yeah, like that'll work)

Valerie Scherr 02-16-2011 11:46 AM

Those were a great deal on clearance last year... they will eventually get mounted onto the wall, but can't do that until I get the room in order. I use the little drawers to hold new needles, extra pins, one has crochet stitch markers, one has hand-sewing needles, one has chocolate kisses (gotta have my chocolate!) etc.

you aren't kidding ~ I should probably hide the sewing machine power cord to help me stay on task... I would rather be sewing and FMQ a couple projects right now! Just ran outta cardboard wrappers again... off to the store for MORE :)

roseOfsharon 02-16-2011 12:58 PM

Good Job! Great fabrics too!

dixiebelle162002 02-16-2011 01:04 PM

Looking good!

19angel52 02-17-2011 03:00 AM

what a difference a "little" organization makes!!!! We're in the process of moving - hope to get the big stuff moved in this weekend (19th and 20th of Feb) and since it's loft space - no closets. Found 3 great storage units to be used as closets...and glory be, 2 great storage cabinet for my fabric!!! Yayyyy - dust free storage!
Wonderful job of organizing...!

lurag 02-17-2011 03:08 AM

Oh My! Love all your fabric and your organization. When I have alot of new fabric I don't want to sleep. My mind is always thinking of what I am going to make. Thx for sharing! Lura

FranM 02-17-2011 03:20 AM

I wanted to reorganize too; however, like you I couldn't afford those boards. I went to Hobby Lobby and bought sheets of cardboard, they're just a bit larger than a fat quarter and cut them. I can get 21 pieces for the smaller pieces of fabric from each board with only a tiny amount of waste. Your idea of recycling is much better, no matter how we do it we all feel a lot better about our stash when it's organized.

Buttons922 02-17-2011 03:34 AM

Wish you didn't live so far away...I would hire you!!! Great job!!

chickadeee55 02-17-2011 03:35 AM

Good Job, it is looking great.

emerald46 02-17-2011 04:11 AM

Wow! What an accomplishment. When I did my first de-stash last weekend it was like Christmas, finding fabric I forgot about. Love having it on the boards instead of folded and stacked. Makes me feel I can really see what is there.

katesnanna 02-17-2011 04:21 AM

OMG!! I feel so much better about mine. I have to keep mine reasonably tidy as it is also my bedroom.
DH says stop buying if you don't have room but he doesn't understand this addiction.

FranM 02-17-2011 04:49 AM

Isn't that the truth! There's something about the feel of new fabric that gets us every time.

stitchinwitch 02-17-2011 05:35 AM

Isn't it amazing that how the amount of fabric "shrinks" ones they are boarded??

Quilting Pastor 02-17-2011 07:00 AM

I saw a piece of fabric in your collection that I have! How fun!

Mariposa 02-17-2011 07:05 AM

Wow! What a stash! Congrats on success in small steps! It does come together! :)

dkabasketlady 02-17-2011 07:18 AM

You have your own LQS in your sewing room with that much fabric. I'm glad you're getting it organized so that you can utilize what you have. Congrats on doing such a good job.

greenini 02-17-2011 07:54 AM

I am *so* jealous. Both of your shelves and the energy to do it all...it looks fabulous.

How are you cutting bolt cardboard down? I brought home 3 centers thinking I could get 2 sides out of it, but these have a kind of waffle center and I wasn't sure if it made sense to try to cut them down somehow. Maybe there are other manufacturers who don't do this and it is just the cardboard sides?

Therese 02-17-2011 08:13 AM

Doesn't it feel good to be getting it organized? I feel more creative in a some what straightened up environment. I used to be fine with chaos but don't tolerate it so well any more. I've been helping a friend get her sewing room put together because she threatened with having her home insurance cancelled because she had stacks of fabric 3 ft high in every room of her house, including the hallway, I kid you not. She HAD to let an insurance adjuster in her house because of water damage from a refrigerator leak and he took a picture secretly with his phone. I love seeing her be excited about having a room to sew in and discover stuff she had forgotten about. It's been a lot of hard work and she's thrown away, donated and will have her 2nd large garage sale soon.

RedGarnet222 02-17-2011 08:42 AM

Oh wonderful space now to go and create! I love it!!!

I straighten mine up every friday afternoon. That is how I keep mine organized and clean.
