I still make most of my clothes. I am anxious to start sewing for my DGD. I've made her a few things, but 7 month old babies are hard to fit as they grow so fast. When she starts walking I'll start making her some dresses.

40 years ago my SS was a machine between the washer and back door. Next we enclosed the carport, (different house and years later). This is my 5th sewing studio. I have a wonderful DH. He enclosed the garage for me about 5 years ago.

The trick is that as they move out, you fill in their space. First I used the closet space, then I moved in my sewing things, etc., etc, etc.. If they "need" to come back (temporarily) there's a nice day bed ready for them.

sneaky sneaky GailG! Sadly I'd really have to knock down a wall. None of our rooms are big enough to house a big long quilting frame. I have it set up at 10' right now and it fills the room - with very little on either side to spare. Yup. No pantographs for me!! I can't really get behind the frame! I'd have to crawl under it to do anything lol. It's all good in the end though. I'm hoping that maybe in the future I can talk my husband in to a room upstairs for me. That would be sweet - or we could knock out a wall, move the computer room in to the dining room after the kids stop using the dining room as a play room... oh there are ways to do it I'm sure. I do have my eye on the attic space. It wasn't framed to be a working area but I'm thinking if we could knock out the roof... add on an addition....

Yeah. I know. keep dreaming. But if I do start to quilt for profit he agrees that my set up would not work at all. We'll see. Right now I don't see it as a profit - just as a hobby with potential :D

I love your sewing studio. How are those patterns staying on the wall?? That is a genious idea.
Linda

Wow!!! OK I'm jealous.

betlinsmom 01-04-2010 08:43 AM

Way too cool!! It is wonderful to have a designated space even a smallish cramped messy space like MINE!!! i used to work on a 10 feet long floor frame to quilt and just could not stand te cramp so i changed to using quilting hoops and put my 6 foot cutting table up which also holds 2 of my machines. I LOVE your style and it beckons to me (OOOOOO0) giggle I know you will have tons of fun in your beautimous studio!! enjoy

They are in baggies and stapled to the wall. That way the pattern is not damaged.

Oklahoma Suzie 01-05-2010 04:16 AM

Great sewing space.

sewsewquilter 01-05-2010 06:23 AM

Wow, look at all of those scissors AND machines. LOVE the patterns border on the wall.

Shorebird 01-06-2010 11:30 AM

This is absolutely STUPENDOUS!! What are the dimensions of your room?

Olivia's Grammy 01-06-2010 02:54 PM

My SS is 20x20. Used to be a garage.

OMG! What an inspiration for me. I just asked on another thread if anyone made a pressing station out of an old chest of drawers.. or something similar. That is just what I want to do. Yours look like base cabinets. I need to have some items do double duty by having storage underneath. Any advice on attaching the pressing cloth parts?
I have a huge collection of vintage patterns also and think that would be a neat way to display them! Thank you, thank you for posting! I think it is just beautiful!

charmpacksplus 01-06-2010 04:09 PM

Sewing machines, scissors, books, design wall...... something is missing! Where is all the fabric? I know you have some somewhere. But it's still a great room even if you're hiding the best part!

I wanted a chest of drawers, but DH saw the base cabinets on Craigslist for free soooooooo.
The top is a piece of plywood. I covered it with foil, batting and muslin which I stapled it down. DH nailed small stips of wood to the plywood so it would sit inside the cabinet base.

All my fabric is stored in my smallest bedroom (14x12) in plastic tubs. Yes, I have a whole room of fabric. I should have posted a picture of that room when I posted my SS pictures. I wondered when someone would ask about the fabric.

betlinsmom 01-06-2010 06:48 PM

A whole room of fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please, is there room for me????!!!!!!! tee hee

Olivia's Grammy 01-07-2010 04:18 AM

I do go through and sort out the less desirables when I can find the time. I have to make sure DH is out of the house first. He'll say "Well can't you use it in a quilt?" Come I'll make room for you.

betlinsmom 01-07-2010 06:35 PM

Oh wow!! Thanks!! I am on my way and I am wearing my thimble!!!

What a great organized room you have! And you have another room dedicated to fabrics! WOW Post a pic so we can drool over them :)

Ok, here are some pictures of my fabric room. Had to tidy up a little first. If you drool, please lean away from the fabric ;)

This is inside a closet, when I close the curtain I have pockets for projects

This is my feed sacks, plus if you look at the right hand corner you can see a tip of white. There are 2 more smaller tubs.

This is my recycled wool. My recycled blue jeans are under my bed.

Wow, a whole room for fabric! And my husband thinks I have too much...LOL!
My next question is about the black "pegboard" that you have. It doesn't look like regular pegboard. Is it metal?
The stuff from "Wall control" by chance? IF so, how do you like it?

Olivia's Grammy 01-08-2010 06:44 AM

The pegboard is plastic. It came from Lowe's or Home Depot. DH bought this a couple of years ago. And yes, I love it. It has different size pegs.
