When I showed this as a WIP, someone tagged it as a Shabby Chic Quilt. I wasn't familiar with your USA stores of the name til then. The name stuck. Alas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think the colours are all that close to true. And it seems my Virgin Fabric pic has gone AWOL. Here it is from when I posted it as a WIP.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-123058-1.htm

I did the border/binding a little differently. Once quilted, the backing was left wider, then wrapped to the front with the lace and flange, to create the borders. A line of stitching on the lace next to the flange holds it all in place. Then I quilted around the edge of the lace to hold in place and complete the quilting.

The backing of the quilt is totally done in the virgin fabric.

I tried a bunch of shots of the corner, and this is maybe the best of the lot. I'm afraid it really doesn't show you much more than what you already know.

Another corner shot ... I'm going to leave it up, not so much for the corner view, rather so you can see the different colours/designs that resulted. of the quilt

very nice! love the colors

susiequilt 07-31-2011 06:34 AM

That came out super. Interesting technique with the lace.

btty 07-31-2011 06:40 AM

I think it is absolutely beautiful.

greencat 07-31-2011 06:41 AM

Very pretty!

GingerK 07-31-2011 06:42 AM

That is lovely. I like the idea of using the origional fabric on the back. And the lace makes it look so dainty and feminine. OBW is on my Bucket list--keeping my eye out for the perfect fabric.

MTS 07-31-2011 06:42 AM

Beautiful - the quilt and the staging. ;-)

Can you post a close-up of the border - maybe a corner? I'd like to see the lace a bit better to understand how it was attached - maybe a corner picture with the miter. Thanks. ;-)

Ah, I see you did. Let me go look. Well, they were there, and now they're not. Hmmm.

Wow! You're so clever!

LindaM 07-31-2011 06:46 AM

Beautiful :)

Ditto on the request for a close up of the lace - sounds like it adds a perfect finishing touch.

hperttula123 07-31-2011 06:47 AM

Beautiful!!!

Will do! I'll take some pics and come back with them.

Maybe today's pics will give you a better look of the true colour. I've searched my computer files and the "good" pic of the virgin fabric seems to have gone AWOL!

MTS 07-31-2011 06:59 AM

That is so weird. I could swear I saw two pics of the lace in-progress, and then they went poof.

I will await your posting.

You did! ..... I had them up for a bit to see if they showed the colour better. Although they really weren't in progress, as I had it pinned on for a look at what it might be ... and changed the plan! :) Have the new pics now ... and will soon be posting.

k3n 07-31-2011 07:15 AM

This is beautiful - so soft, gentle and elegant. Looking forward to seeing the lace up close too... :-D

kathdavis 07-31-2011 07:22 AM

Gorgeous!

nativetexan 07-31-2011 07:34 AM

that is fabulous!! magnificient!!

QuiltE 07-31-2011 07:41 AM

I've added the extra pictures. SO SORRY that there are now so many .... I put up a bunch with the intent of deleting some out after I checked what might be best. In the meantime the edit time limit expired and now they are locked!!

I don't think the corner shots have helped you much to see what I did. I'll try to describe it .... LAQ completed, and when it came back to me I left excess backing and batting as I trimmed. Once I measured and was "sure" (and believe you me, I was measuring and triple measuring to make sure I had it was right), then I trimmed the batting to the width of the lace, and left the backing double the width plus the seam allowance.

Sewed the lace on next to the outside edge of the backing with scant 1/4". On top of that sewed the flange (folded 1" piece) at 1/4". Then folded the edge inwards so that the flange flipped away from the lace to lay on top of the quilt. Then started pinning in place.

Because the backing is one piece and not two pieces meeting for the mitre, the corners were awkward. I kind of poufed them up, cut out excess, and then started folding and fiddling til I had the mitre somewhat where I was happy, and pinned in place. Then did my first stitching all the way around on the lace edge next to the flange, and a single machine line down the mitre to hold. Then finally I stitched all around the lace scallops to hold in place, and to quilt the batting, backing and lace all together.

No technique ... just my own fiddling to do it! :)

luvstitches 07-31-2011 08:26 AM

Stunning!!!

BeckyL 07-31-2011 08:27 AM

That is absolutley stunning. OBW is on my bucket list. I have the book, just waiting for the "right" fabric.

KR 07-31-2011 08:29 AM

Beautiful!! What a great idea to add the lace border....makes it very feminine looking. Love it!!

Don't shortchange yourself. That's a technique. A very cool one.
And your explanation answered every question I had about the process.

One really needs to plan ahead to do this - especially in making sure there is enough backing material.

Thanks again for all the details.

The quilt is beautiful and looks like it fits in perfectly with the existing decor.

Stunning quilt! Love the fabric, the lace addition is gorgeous! :D:D:D

annthreecats 07-31-2011 08:35 AM

Love the lace border on it. Really looks nice.

Thanks MTS!

The backing did require a seam, being that it was 40x60 before I decided on the extra bordering. No way, was I sacrificing any of the OBW front to save backing!!! :) Luckily I got a perfect match on the seam, so it is insignificant.

As for the decor match, that wasn't a plan at all, though I am thrilled. I'm not sure if it will hang on the wall or drape over furniture yet. I bought the fabric a few years ago because I liked it and thought, yes, it's for a OBW ... then was scared to do it on my own and waited for a course. I'm glad I did and probably had the best teacher I've had in any sewing course, ever! :)

The fabric did not lend to a border on the quilt. As I worked with it, the quilt talked to me to keep it light, airy and feminine (and I am SO not that!). From my earlier threads, many of you know, for awhile I was considering a self-fabric ruffle edge or lace ruffle. Then alas, I decided a flat lace would be better. IMHO the flange just seems to do a perfect framing of it all!

As for that blue one in the midst .... it was the prototype run! I did change my "technique" after doing it, but felt a 2nd prototype wasn't needed.

Hope this has helped many of you with ideas for future projects! I'll look forward to seeing yours.

sparkys_mom 07-31-2011 01:06 PM

Nothing shabby about this! It is absolutely gorgeous.

bearisgray 07-31-2011 01:08 PM

Goes perfectly with the room.

I like the lace/border/edging effect.

BuzzinBumble 07-31-2011 01:28 PM

Wow - that's a lovely quilt! And there is no shabby to be seen. Only chic, soft and feminine without getting too fru-fru.
The flat lace is beautiful, probably even more so than a ruffled lace would have been. It adds elegance, whereas a ruffled lace border would have added cuteness. Thank you for the explanation on how you did it too!

I think we think alike as to why I went to the simplicity of the flange and flat lace.

I smiled when I saw you had written fru-fru, as I am SO NOT a fluffy-fluffy-fru-fru person and told others while working on this that it was my token quilt for that mode! :)

pineneedles4 07-31-2011 04:50 PM

I really love the colors in your quilt! Great job! I love the battenburg lace effect.

The new pics are great - and thank you so much for your explanation of the 'fiddling about' - perfectly clear. :D

Cuddly Quilter 08-01-2011 02:16 AM

You can be extremely proud of your quilt. I love your layout and using the lace on border - excellent. Very clever using the uncut fabric for the backing.
Thanks for sharing
