Breathing the fumes again =)

I've got 2 - 66 Red Eyes and the process of cleaning them up is quite fun.

Wow!! Great job....well worth the effort:)

gypsyquilter 07-14-2011 04:59 PM

sweet!

doglover 07-14-2011 05:00 PM

Did you switch machines? Are you sure this is a before and after picture of the SAME machine? It is hard to believe. You did a wonderful job.
Again, great job. Does not look like the same machine.

Maggie_Sue 07-14-2011 05:00 PM

Great work!!!

earthwalker 07-14-2011 05:02 PM

She scrubbed up beautifully. Stunning machine.

boysmomoflabs 07-14-2011 05:04 PM

HAHAHA...I don't think I would be lucky enough to have two of them with that good of condition on decals.

The second one is going to be ugly....oy'

(I don't use GoJo)

Oh...the wheel you see in some of the pictures is the other machine, yes. They are sitting there side by side.

When they are BOTH done, I'll do a side by side for you =)

brushandthimble 07-14-2011 05:07 PM

WOW she is now a beauty!

amBoo 07-14-2011 05:12 PM

What a beautiful machine! You did a great job cleaning up the decals. What do you use to get all the yuck off?

Nancy

boysmomoflabs 07-14-2011 05:13 PM

gloves, q-tips, soft toothbrush and Liquid Wrench and the bug and tar you see in the background

(don't use 409...nope...uh huh....)

Use TriFlow oil and grease when they're cleaned up.

amBoo 07-14-2011 05:15 PM

Wow, Liquid Wrench cleans it like that? Well, I know what I'm going shopping for tomorrow! Thanks for the information :-)

Nancy

Ramona Byrd 07-14-2011 05:18 PM

Wow, what a beauty. She's worth all the trouble.
Now you can sew sew sew.

Glenn 07-14-2011 05:19 PM

What a wonderful job you did. Very nice Glenn

boysmomoflabs 07-14-2011 05:20 PM

amBoo (Nancy)

takes time with the L-Wrench. I use it mostly for the inside (gears) till I noticed the run off was cutting the gunk. Go easy on it, use the yellow can and do a test area first.

blueangel 07-14-2011 05:57 PM

Very nice

baskets4moo 07-14-2011 06:04 PM

Unbelievable! Now I want a 66 even more! Must remember Liquid Wrench and lots of elbow grease!

amBoo 07-14-2011 06:05 PM

Thanks! I just found a little can of it in my husband's workshop so I'll test it out this weekend. I have damaged the decals a little with GoJo :-( so I'll give this a careful try.

Let the L-Wrench work, rub gently, spritz more hand wipe in...set, rub gently.
Very slow process.

Now on the insides...spray, rub with toothbrush and take out frustration. Will shine up nice and purdy =)

That is one of the most gorgeous machines Singer made. Good for you to clean her up! :D

ChattyKathy 07-14-2011 06:39 PM

I am in the process also...I hope mine comes out as beautiful.

deplaylady 07-14-2011 06:57 PM

Wow! Great job!

boysmomoflabs 07-14-2011 07:09 PM

It's been brought to my attention, and talked about, that I've posted pictures of two different machines stating before and after

quote: 'side-by-side' BEFORE and AFTER pictures of it.

Yes, there are two machines sitting on this table, I've stated that. I've also stated I will post pictures of both machines side by side when they are both done. Then there will be no question or back biting.
If you've got issues with me, say it to me, not childish cattiness.
Oy'...

cabbagepatchkid 07-14-2011 07:22 PM

Gorgeous!! In the first couple of pics it looks as if part of the machine is already cleaned and part of it still dirty. Do you mean that you used the L-Wrench on the black/decal part of your red-eye?! I'm going to give it a try!!!!! I have several red eyes that I cleaned with sewing machine oil but they didn't come as clean as that!

I have to laugh at your work area. I have those same things sitting on my table when I work. Is that also a bottle of Howard's Feed-N-Wax peeking out from under that rag? Awesome stuff.

boysmomoflabs 07-14-2011 07:36 PM

Cathy

In the first couple of pictures I started to clean it, then realized I didn't have any before pictures. The wet / shiny part is where I started. Yes, I'm using Liquid Wrench on everything.
The Feed and Wax is from the treadle I restored on Sat. If you search my threads, you'll find pictures of it. One of these 66's were with that cabinet, one is with a thrashed cabinet still sitting on the floor.
You'll see the can of L-Wrench and a can of Bug and Tar in the background of the pictures. I used the Bug and Tar on a 201 I just cleaned.

Maybe you should start on the inside of the other one with your toothbrush and get your frustration out before finishing gently with this one.LOL You are certainly doing a great job. It is simply beautiful (after). I have one in a treadle, do you make house calls?HaHa Good job can't hardly wait to see your "twins".

Jammin' Jane 07-14-2011 09:47 PM

WOW! Sure turned out pretty!
Nice job!

quilter68 07-15-2011 04:32 AM

Beautiful!

LindaR 07-15-2011 04:37 AM

its unbelieveable how the decals can be under all that black stuff...I used kerosene (Billy recommended) and was amazed when the lotus blossom started emerging..LOL Takes alot of soaking and scrubbing but so pretty when done.

ambquilter 07-15-2011 05:30 AM

Amazing!!! What a beautiful machine you have now!!

Exactly!! It's work but so encouraging when you start to see results!!

barbo117 07-15-2011 06:35 AM

WOW, that is beautiful. These machines are works of art! Congratulations to you.

nena 07-15-2011 06:44 AM

I just was gifted with one just like that. What do you use to clean them and not distroy the decals?
That turned out beautiful!

Lucky 07-15-2011 06:48 AM

I have cleaned up my old machines but never been able to get the shine you have on yours in the pictures. Which product did you use to get the shine? My Dad got me using WD40 to loosen up the guts and get things turning again. I have an old Universal that I have been soaking for a couple of months now and turning daily but it is still too tight for the motor to pull it. Any suggestions?

JudieRQuilting 07-15-2011 07:02 AM

She is gorgeous. You did a great job of cleaning her up.

redpurselady 07-15-2011 07:14 AM

Nancy Ingham 07-15-2011 08:46 AM

Wow, Wow, Wow! Thank you for sharing your pictures and restoration ideas. You have inspired me to tackle the ones that I have recently obtained. Beautiful job!
Thanks.

greaterexp 07-15-2011 08:46 AM

I would read Billy's tutorials. Look up "how to clean a vintage machine" in the search here. He's got a wonderful tutorial that lists all the materials you need.
