My sis is deployed again and said she'd really like a quilt for her "place" while she's there. She sent me some of her old uniforms and I cut, cut, cut!

All the pieces were done using the Rhonda Woodsmall cutdown method. I'd say this is my most accurate quilt yet!

My 5-year old's bed/room. Should I send the Barbie car with it? :D

Mendocino Mermaids...they were too pretty not to use!

^^^NO, not really! It's harder to find sections of material that don't have seams, kwim? Some things I found out while I was disassembling:

Some seams are doubled over material, so if you pick apart the threads, there's actually no raw edge there, or you've got an extra half inch of fabric that you wouldn't think you had.

The "rear" of the pants is two thicknesses of fabric.

It's easiest to use scissors to slice up a seam (like the underarm) and work on smaller sections at a time, instead of trying to cut accurately while the rest of the garment is sliding about.

The back of the BDU top is the largest area of unsewn fabric, so use that WISELY!

Forget the "press to the dark" rule. I used the "press to the not BDU side" rule because even my best fabrics are not as thick as BDU.

You used some old uniforms in this quilt?! I had to study it a long time to see the camouflage fabric. You have turned a pig's ear into a silk purse. The quilt is beautiful! I know your sis will love, love, love it. I certainly do.

Love the quilt and the car...yes, the car should go with the quilt. you can tell your sister that you made the quilt and decided to buy her a car too.love it. you are a wonderful sister...i'm sure she appreciates you. Tell sister soldier that the quilting sisters appreciates her commitment and hard work for our country. Peace be with your family.

quiltingfan 01-20-2011 04:41 AM

I have my husbands old uniforms that I have rescued from the dump and have to cut them down. I love how you incorporated them in to this quilt without it shouting Army all over it. Will have to bookmark this for future insight when I move and have time to work on it. Tell your sis we send our prayers with her. My hubby did 2 tours over there, not a fun experience at all.

morelcabin 01-20-2011 05:28 AM

That is beautiful! I love everything about it! Love the larger blocks top and bottom...adds so much personality

Rebecca VLQ 01-20-2011 05:28 AM

Thanks for the props everybody! :D

It's on its way to the desert as we speak! I just thought of something when others are saying their spouses are going in a few months...my BROTHER is doing a second tour here in a few months, too! I better get crackin'!

I'll send all your good wishes to her. She's really in my Top 5 for favorite people ever, and I know not everyone gets a super awesome sister like that. ;)
