here are 2 of the small snap bags I made....( I have made about 30 or more) I used the tutorial from http://tatteredgarden.blogspot.com/2...-tutorial.html
Most of them I lined also with plastic zip lock bags so they will be good for snacks or cosmetics etc

Mellina 08-06-2010 06:19 AM

Thanks for the pic. They look lovely and are very useful also. I am going to give this a try.

You can get the metal tape measures at Dollar stores and for the larger totes you need the ones that are 1" wide and I found those at Just a Buck

cherylynne 08-06-2010 06:26 AM

Very clever project. I am going to try some.

shikha 08-06-2010 06:32 AM

Great idea, cute bags

Thanks for the tut. There is a little girl that sits next to me in church and she alway's has Cheerios in a Ziploc that goes all over. She can't quite get the hang of the zip part. She's still pretty young. I think I will make her one of these.

I think that is a lovely idea..I made one for my 2 1/2 yr old grand for that purpose ..for all snacks..and my older grands use theirs for things like hair clips and scrunchies etc

Wish I had more fish fabric..someone had given me a small piece for my postcards for my granddaughter and I could squeak out a snap bag from it....

franie 08-06-2010 09:50 AM

I love the shape of these and the purpose. We are doing them at our retreat on Labor Day. I did a bunch for gifts last Christmas.

zyxquilts 08-06-2010 11:04 AM

Those are too cute! I'm not much of a bag maker, but I think even I could do some of those. Thanks for the pics & the link to the blog instructions.
Now to find some metal tape measures... :D

lallyann 08-06-2010 11:17 AM

these are so neat! I'm going to look for some tape measures next time I'm at a dollar store! Thanks for posting. Do you cut your ziplock bags for the lining? Probably a silly question, but I'm having trouble visualizing!! Thanks for posting the tutorial info too!

quiltilicious 08-06-2010 11:41 AM

Wow... I'm amazed at how clever people are at re-purposing things. I must have tossed more than one tape measure with a broken spring. The ones in the house are used all the time, so I can't cannibalize them.

MISHNJIM 08-06-2010 11:45 AM

I've made these also. The instructions I had were a little different but all comes out the same way. I use mine to put my rotary cutter, scissors, etc for when I got to my sewing classes.

littlehud 08-06-2010 02:06 PM

Those are so cute. I can think of lots of uses.

craftybear 08-06-2010 10:15 PM

thank you for the link

Thanks for the pics, I'm going to make these for dog training, to keep smelly treats in.Now all I have to do is find the metal closures somewhere on line. Any ideas where?
Forgot to look before posting, it uses an actual tape measure. Even better. Two plumbers and a builder as son/soninlaws, they break ém regularly.

Jeri6 08-07-2010 12:19 AM

Really Cute. Thank you for showing us these.

Perfect!! My first one dh gave me..not broken..he thought he had a broken one but couldn't find it and figured he threw it out..so gave me a good one..I used it....THEN he found the broken one..that was ok I used that one too and found some $ stores have the 1" wide ones and some have the 3/4" ones

peaceandjoy 08-07-2010 03:55 AM

Thank you for sharing! I'd given up looking on line for a pattern/tutorial, finally bought the pattern at a shop a few weeks ago. Oh well.

Yours are very cute & I like the idea of lining w/ plastic bag.

Just saw one a friend did when I shared the site with her on how to make these...she made it long for a pencil case but she used hers for scissors etc in her sewing tote...will make one and post a pic as soon as I can!

If you are talking about the snap bags, it just a part of a metal measuring tape that is cut to size. I made a purse using them. I cut four piece of the measuring tape puting two of them together per side and used duct tape to cover the ends which I had rounded. No points they will wear out the fabric. Double your fabric or use batting in that area on both sides for more protection. K

calla 08-18-2010 06:57 AM

Sue Fish, great idea using the plastic bags, they do sew up fast especially using the double sides pre-quilted fabric..........calla/Sue

Ritzquilts 08-20-2010 07:11 AM

Really cute Sue, can't wait to see others you do

When you made these bags did you sandwich with batting and still used lining? Or did you just use 2 pieces of fabric for the inner and outer and how did you put the plastic bag inside it.

Your bag looks wider at the top than what the picture shows from the link of the tattered garden. How much more did you make the adjustment? Love your bags.

Don't mind me I always seem to ask questions before I get going on something or get the job done. I made one and looks fine.

Tink74 09-14-2010 05:07 AM

I would love to make these...my Daughter is just in First Grade and there are many years of lunches left. I have seen them with wide velcro and don't see any prbolem altering to do so also, but my main question is, is there anything more 'permanant' than a ziplock to line them with...something washable? Vinyl maybe? Ideas?

quilterj 09-14-2010 12:23 PM

I made one and sewed vinyl in it. I made it to be a make up bag. I will get it postdd within the next couple days.

I just used ziplock gallon size bags. Food safe

Tink74 09-15-2010 05:21 PM

WHat do they use to back things like bibs?

quiltinggirl 09-15-2010 05:23 PM

Very pretty. Wonderful idea about using the zip log bags inside! :)
