Finished this little mini top last night. It's a disappearing nine patch. Fun to do. Just sew it first, then cut it all up and rearrange the blocks. Can't wait to make another - very addictive and quick performing. Here's a pic:

Believe me, it's a real challenge! With the naked eye, my quilt looks well aligned but stick it under the scrutiny of camera lens and every flaw pops up (especially thru an enlarged photo)! Thanks for your nice words. Hope everyone enjoys my miniature!

Whoa! those are some small pieces. Good job.

That is beautiful, but I don't think I could work with anything that small. Great job.

Quilt4u 10-06-2009 01:40 AM

Wow!!!!

k3n 10-06-2009 02:49 AM

That's beautiful. I love minis - it's such a great way to try out stuff and quickly gratifying! Have you thought of joining in the Doll Quilt Swap? :D

I'm thinking what a better job I could do if I had a better machine. Just can't seem to part with my klunker. The most incredible thing of all is that my feed dogs died (ha ha ha ha) and I have to gently nudge my fabric through!! Is that incredible or what? I also had to reroute my threading to bypass a trapzone area on the machine! Is that incredible or what? Hope whoever reads this will really appreciate their sewing machine after reading of my handicapped machine. So you see, it really was a challenge and a half...ha.ha.ha.ha.   Nevertheless, I continue on no matter what!!!

Thanks Quilt4U and thanks K3N for your kindness! Yes, have been seriously thinking a lot about doll quilts lately and possibly getting into that area of the Doll Quilt Swaps! Aren't they irresistible??? Here's a picture of a mini I want to try my hand at. It's kind of freestyle piecing.

here's the pic:

A quilter after my own heart!! How cute. What size did you make the beginning squares? I, too, make mini's, and not paper pieced ones. Have you noticed how the fabric design changes when sewn in smaller pieces? The scale of the fabric takes on a new look. I've learned alot about thinking in color values, too.

wow, where are my 10x spectagoggles? very cute, n2scrapluvr! :D

Thank you, OKSG. Glad you like my mini! I decided to start off with 2-1/2" squares because already had some pairs made up I keep on hand all the time. Keep 4-patches made up too. Didn't pay any attn to color because for once in my life I could not predetermine the outcome of the block arrangement which was a lot of fun in itself as the end result is always a surprise! So the 6" square became the 9 patch; then 3-3/4" became my 4 patch. The mini is 7-3/4" and with inner and outer borders it comes to a perfect 16" square. So the next time I want to focus on the color aspect. In answer to your question, I haven't noticed the new look the fabric takes on as I was focused only on trying out this block. I do lots of minis and don't paper piece them anymore. I found the dryer sheets you use drying clothes makes a wonderful scent on the minis and works great for fdn. piecing. Some brands work better than others. I iron them first. The used ones work the best! You'll have to try this idea out!! A real plus is the see-thru aspect of the sheets! Can't wait to see your posts of your minis!

I'm amazed that anyone can work with such small pieces. What a colorful mini quilt. A few changes in colors and the disappearing 9 patch can be amazingly different. Nice work!

Thank you, Jacquemoe!! It truly was a fun block to do! You're so right on the versatility of colors on this amazing block. It only draws us quilters into trying our hand at it again and again. Oh, the possibilities!!! BTW, I've seen your GREAT and BEAUTIFUL feather quilting posted over the summer and have to say I've never seen anything better but the Amish do come in a close second to yours!! ha.

Hi kd124 and thank you so much! That sure looks like a disappearing 9 patch to me in your avatar or am I just all 9-patched out? ha.ha. Anyway, your avatar is just so lovely like so many others on here. We'll all have to have an "avatar day" where we do nothing but change our avatars!!!

Deecee 10-08-2009 01:32 PM

Love your fabrics in your cute mini. What is the overall size of it?

Love the look of the freestyle mini you want to try.

Hi Deecee! First let me say, your pooch is adorable!!! Is that a Shih Tzu? We have two Shih Tzus - they're from China like everything else!! ha.ha.ha.

Thank you for your kindness! The overall size is 7-3/4" and with both borders, it's a perfect 16" square. I just threw this together but sometimes being spontaneous is better than preplanning! Yes, yes, the other floral is a stressbuster for sure and yes adorable! Can't wait to try this out! Thanx again.

I just changed my avatar. I think you are talking about the blocks of blues/teals and browns. If so it is just chunks of leftover fabric and is actually the back of the quilt I intended to put as my avatar. Before that I had a brighter one; it was orange and green (mostly) and was a OBW. Anyway, thank you for the compliment. I am going in now to change to the pic I intended to use which is the front of the "chunks" one.

Deecee 10-08-2009 05:29 PM

Hi n2scraplvr, Moppet is a Lhasa Apso/Maltese cross. She's 11 years old and takes advantage of the cuteness factor.

Expecting pics of floral mini when done.

That new avatar is even better than the other!! Am really into color these days and I tell you that is awesome!

Hi Deecee! When I first looked at Moppet, I was thinking Maltese, Lhasa, Bichon Fraise. They look so similar - here's my shih tzu that almost can pass for a lhasa

This is Bogey

Ooops - Cha Cha is in that picture too. They both love each other dearly.

Also, will post pics of the floral when I get it done. Let me know also which fabrics you love in my mini and I'll send you some. Just pm me.
