The cartoonish gnomes are my least favourite of this line, too. Like the dots, which are always a no brainer.
Just my two cents.

We decided to order all the dots ('cause they're fun) and all the checks; together just these will make a nice grouping. And we ordered the mushrooms on brown and the gnomes on yellow.

By the way, it's actually a nice yellow, not too goldy and not at all mustardy. Not too strong; should "play well with others".
