Snow-dyed baby quilt

1 Attachment(s)
I snow-dyed some fabric a couple of weeks ago and just finished this baby quilt with the results. The dyed fabric is permanent and completely safe using professional products.

I found some cute Disney fabric for the back and it all came together nicely.

kathy 03-12-2015 08:59 AM

I love it, since we don't get snow I've done it with shaving cream.

melodyr 03-12-2015 09:05 AM

We don't get snow very often, so I use ice cubes from my refrigerator too. You don't even have to crush it, just put ice on the fabric and sprinkle the dye over that. Works great. The fabric color is a bit more intense than with the snow, but it works great. I'll see if I can dig up a piece of ice-dyed fabric and post that here.

BrendaK 03-12-2015 09:16 AM

That's kool. What is the process? Is there a formula? Would love to hear more about this. BrendaK

QuiltnNan 03-12-2015 09:32 AM

very nicely done. i always found snow dyeing fascinating

melodyr 03-12-2015 09:45 AM

BrendaK, I posted a little tutorial over on QB's Facebook page. Do you like us on FB? If not, I can do a tutorial over here too.

paintmejudy 03-12-2015 10:40 AM

Love your fabric! This is the first time since I moved away from the snow belt back east (40 years ago) that I miss snow!

lynnie 03-12-2015 12:01 PM

beautiful. we have snow. I should try it. great job.

debcavan 03-12-2015 01:09 PM

The snow dying is so fun. Thanks for showing your set up. Love the quilt.

elly66 03-12-2015 01:21 PM

Very pretty. I really like to do the ice cube dying and low immersion dying myself. It's fun to see what comes out as long as I don't have a particular color in mind. I've used prepared for dying fabric but also muslin. It can be messy but a lot of fun too.

melodyr 03-12-2015 01:57 PM

elly66, I use Kona cotton. I get the 108" bolt ends at Hancocks of Paducah at a discount and wash it in hot water. Works great.

I would "like QB" if I knew how. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Lovely quilt and interesting method. Will have to follow and see how it's done!

JuneBillie 03-12-2015 09:14 PM

That is just so pretty. I have never heard of doing it like this.

twinkie 03-13-2015 02:32 AM

Very interesting concept. I should try it. You quilters amaze me constantly.

Daisy Dew 03-13-2015 03:50 AM

Wow now I hear about snow dye just as the last bits are M E L T I N G! Happy dance here. Think I'll try it with refrigerator ice. Bye Bye snow.

melodyr 03-13-2015 04:38 AM

Here's the Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/QuiltingBoard?ref=bookmarks

I'll put together a tutorial with refrigerator ice and post it here too...it will be a few days, but I'll get it posted and a link here.

In the summer (or areas without snow) you could always grab some zamboni snow if you have a skating arena in your area.

solstice3 03-13-2015 05:48 AM

Great end product

yngldy 03-13-2015 08:42 AM

Heard on the news last week that someone was shipping snow from back east to anyone for around $100. (In case anyone is interested.) I am in no way affiliated with them! lol

QUILTNMO 03-13-2015 08:56 AM

very neat!!!

MargeD 03-13-2015 11:12 AM

Very nice. If you were looking for more snow, we still have plenty of it left in MA.

wildwoodflower12390 03-13-2015 11:37 AM

The results are beautiful, here in Texas we don't get much snow (this year was an exception). I would love to know more about it. I will check QB Facebook page.

wildwoodflower12390 03-13-2015 11:42 AM

Did you use more than one color?

needles3thread 03-13-2015 11:45 AM

The fabric you 'made' is very pretty. I'd love to have some just like it.

Yes, please do one here as I do NOT do FB.

wildyard 03-13-2015 02:29 PM

OMG, I live in the lake effect snow belt of upstate NY and have lots of snow. I have never heard of snow or ice dying before; what a waste of 5 to 7 feet of snow every winter. LOL
I am eager to read the tutorial as I have a good amount of white fabric and I don't like using white in my quilts. This will be a great way to make the white more appealing!

wildyard 03-13-2015 02:43 PM

melodyr, could you use the powdered Rit dye that is available at grocery and craft stores for this process?

Tweety2911 03-13-2015 06:38 PM

The dyed fabrics are wonderful! Beautiful reversible quilt!

Melodyr your fabrics are beautiful! I have ice-dyed and snow-dyed and love them both, though I haven't gotten anything made yet with mine.
Kathy the "shaving cream" sounds interesting would you let us know more about?

wildwoodflower12390, I used 2 colors. One was lapis and turquoise and on a second piece I used french blue and indigo. I've found that the process works best with 2 to 3 colors and rarely use more than 3...more than that just tends to muddy up. Here 's some snow dye pieces that I did several years ago. I'll try to get some ice dye images up too...they are much brighter.

mjhaess 03-14-2015 08:26 AM

Very nice fabric...

gramquilter2 03-14-2015 08:59 AM

Love your snow dyed fabric. We haven't had snow here for a quite a while so guess I need to try the ice dyed.
