Snowmen and Snowflakes

2 Attachment(s)
A couple of weeks ago, a few of us took a road trip to a distant LQS, Material Rewards in Dansville NY. We had a blast and the quilt shop is fantastic. I saw these buttons and was going to pass. Later, I said to myself, if you don't buy them you will kick yourself! Now, keeping in mind, I hate to hand sew, sewing 12 buttons on a mini quilt was a brave decision. This is my finish. After 3 1/2 hours of sewing the binding to the back and stitching the miters and sleeve, I did not want to sew the buttons on... so I glued them on! LOL This finished at 9x11. Notice the fussy cut stars in the cornerstones.

Your Snowmen and Snowflakes is so cute. I recently bought a kit just like this and thought it would be fun to make. I guess life got in the way and I never got started. Maybe next year. LOL!!! I thought the buttons were so cute too. Thanks for sharing your work

I would also regret seeing those cute buttons and not buying them. I used to craft stuff and I found that glue doesn't hold hard items to fabric items long term. Even hot glue gave way after a while, especially on Christmas decorations. Possibly the handling of unwrapping them and rewrapping them in tissue when I stored them away until next Christmas? Anyway, I say that because maybe when you are back in the mood for a little hand sewing you may want to sew those buttons on so if the glue does let go over the years you won't lose any of those cute buttons (which I bet you would have a hard time replacing!).

Edited to add, I love how you fussy cut the star fabric to put a star in the middle of each cornerstone. Those little touches made a big difference.

Looks fantastic to me, really adorable.

I love your buttons and I Love Material Rewards. One of my favorite shops - I always stop when I am in NY.

Love your little treasure! I always considered the Danville quilt shop a wonderful place for good fabric, & a large selection of patterns. Their inspiration quilts are so fun. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

I love your mini quilt!

I have some snowflakes similar to yours but I’ve never seen snowman button before.

Very cute! Love small/wall/doll/mini quilts!

When I have a lot of buttons I do them by machine. Get out your manual and it is so quick and easy.

I have often thought of that and might try it on a 'smooth' button, but these are quite dimensional and my machine does not have a 'button holder' foot.

That is adorable! I have glued buttons on things that were not going to be washed. Just so cute!

A1penny 12-10-2018 04:41 AM

What an absolutely adorable tiny quilt, and I do love those fussy cut cornerstones, bet that was worth a lot of sweat!

I have used my regular zig zag foot, 0 stitch length, then adjust the width to meet the holes. It may be a little tricky if the buttons are rounded.

coopah 12-10-2018 05:56 AM

Gluing those buttons on was genius! The whole look of the quilt is nice...and the fussy cut stars make it just the best.

rosiewell 12-10-2018 06:47 AM

Adorable....and I love your idea of gluingthe buttons on! And those tiny star cornerstones....too cute!

anniep 12-10-2018 01:47 PM

I love this little quilt! Your cornerstones and buttons are great details! Years ago I hot glued a ruffle onto a quilted Christmas tree skirt. My husband said,"You can always sew that later. " It remains glued to this day!

I agree about the dimensional buttons. To get the smooth buttons to stay in place before the initial stitching, I put a very small glue dot under the button to hold it. Then just go for it! Love to sew buttons with my machine.
