Update on my first quilt.
The borders are on!! Wahoo! For some reason, I had to really wrestle with the last miter, but there it is!! I have batting and backing fabric, so next I'm reading up on basting. What technique do you like? Also, I guess as far as quilting (another first!!), it will be SID, though that is where the most material/layers are!! Very bulky because my fabrics are all knits that have fusible interfacing and have been sewn to a muslin foundation. Any tips here?? Thanks to everyone who has helped and encouraged me so far!! The end is in sight! |
The piano keys are not as wide as I would've liked, but I had to work with the scraps I had.
|
Spray basting with 505 is my favorite way to layer a quilt -- very fast. Just be sure to spread a large flat sheet out first to catch any overspray. If you do a search on spray basting, you will find lots of info and tips.
Instead of SID, why not use your walking foot to make curvey lines across the quilt? It's a lot easier than SID because you don't have to keep your eyes glued to that ditch. If you're a little bit off nobody knows because the lines aren't supposed to be straight lines. You can do these lines in one direction only, or in two directions to create cross-hatching. You can do the lines across and down, or from corner-to-corner. You can echo-quilt the curving lines or make every line different. p.s. That is a *very* cute quilt!!! |
It's very cute! good work

Ohhhhh....your quilt is so nice and cheery. I hadn't seen the postings of the progression and went back to see it's made of baby clothes. How special is that!! Great idea! As for basting, generally on smaller quilts I spray baste. It holds everything together quite well. Larger quilts I pin baste (haven't been brave enough to try spray basting the larger ones). :) I like the idea of wavy lines for quilting, it will take some of the pressure off during the quilting process. I tend to get very tense when I SID especially if the fabrics are bulky as you pointed out. No matter what you end up doing, it's going to be lovely!

I love this quilt-- love the colors and the design. Really adorable.

Thank you!! Wavy lines sound good! Would I stitch from corner to corner or side to side across the border? I have absolutely zero experience here!! I am going to get a little piece together to practice.

Since it is small and the fabrics are knit baby clothes, why not tie it. You could either tie the center of each block or in the center of the triangle pieces. You could tie it so the knot and tails are on the back. Maybe use pink or even a varigated embroidery floss. Then you could SID the piano border. Just another possibility.

SO adorable! :)

Love the quilt and the colors!
|
I have one word, it is ADORABLE, ok that three words. Here is three more, I love it.
|
That's a great quilt! Love the colors! and the border looks just fine.
As far as basting goes, I use safety pins, but I am considering getting the 505 Basting Spray to try on the next one. Sorry I don't know too much about the quilting part (I'm pretty much a beginner) . . . I'm sure the more experienced quilters will have some great ideas. ;) |
A Beautiful Quilt, and very pretty colors, love your design
|
Love your quilt, pretty colors.

I use the basting spray from JoAnnes. Since it tends to be expensive, I always try to use a coupon......40% or 50% off. I have had very good luck with it. Be sure to do your spraying in a well ventilated space and yes, don't forget a large drop cloth. One more comment, if this quilt is for a baby or child, I would not tie it.
The floss sometimes works itself loose and can cause a choking hazzard. |
That is really pretty.
|
great job
|
Very cute quilt
|
Cute, great job.

Thank you all so much!! You know how to make a girl feel good! You are my quilting friends!! No one I know has the least interest in this sort of thing.
I am going to look for the basting spray. That sounds great. This quilt is prob 40"X48". Would one can be enough? Hmmm...tying! Hadn't thought of that! That could be an option. This quilt is from the clothing of a nearly five-year-old, so I'm not worried about the ties being swallowed. I'll have to look for some tied quilts. Probably less chance for error this way! |
What a cute quilt!! Your borders are great, love what you did and your corners are right on, great job!! If your going to quilt with your feed dogs up I would be sure and use your walking foot to help pull the fabric thru evenly.
|
Looking good!
|
I love it. You did an awesome job!

Sending an "atta girl" your way. I love your first quilt. Baby clothes - what a stupendous idea!! And I absolutely love the colors... You are sure to become an expert quilter in no time flat.

What a wonderful memory quilt! When I think of all the cute knits that I didn"t think to keep for a quilt!!!!! I"ve tied quilts, but I used the perle cotton floss. I think it does a little nicer job, and it comes in such pretty colors.

Soo pretty!! :-D

What a cute quilt. i love the colors. It is a very happy quilt. Nice job!
|
Your quilt is very pretty ... you have done a great job!
|
Your quilt is beautiful! I can't believe you had the nerve to try mitered borders your first time out! Well done!
|
Very cute quilt. When I have made foundation quilts, I've only used flannel as a batting since it is already pretty thick. This will make a nice weight quilt and will dry quickly when washed. You did a very nice job.
|
Beautiful!
|
Thanks so much everyone! :)
I think I may tie it. I'd like to quilt it but I would be sick if I messed up the top because of the quilting. I don't know...torn here. |
I love the fabric! Is that an Atlanta Braves piece on there?? :)
|
Yes, it is!! :)
