So Excited! Finished first full sized quilt for myself!

Well, I finally did it! I attended a quilt retreat with scrap quilting guru Bonnie Hunter in July. The pattern class she taught was with her My Blue Heaven pattern. Here it is Beginning of February and yesterday....drum roll please.....my first full sized quilt that I am keeping for DH and I is now gracing our bed. I named my version, "Starry, starry night" (the name of a pop song when we were much younger). I even sewed down the binding by hand, which isn't my favorite thing, but does give such a nice finish to a binding. (Can you tell I love blue?) Thanks for looking.

it's beautiful... nicely done

DonnaR 02-02-2013 12:06 PM

Wow. It is really wonderful. I also love blue. You did a great job on this quilt.

That is lovely. Great job. Love the doggy on top of your pillow.

nursie76 02-02-2013 12:16 PM

Thanks for all your kind words.
Karen, the doggy was our youngest daughters when she was smaller and Pound Puppies were all the rage. We just recently unearthed it. (BTW she just celebrated her 30th b-day on Tuesday.) She has been living in New Zealand for about 3.5-4 years and I guess it just kinda makes me feel little closer to her.

Very nice, I love blue too. I might buy this pattern.

quiltinggirl 02-02-2013 01:06 PM

What a beautiful quilt! You did a great job.

laurafet 02-02-2013 01:12 PM

Beautiful! Like the penguin pillow too!

nunnyJo 02-02-2013 01:12 PM

great job, nice shading

Debbie B 02-02-2013 01:39 PM

It's a beauty! And sewing the binding on is my least favorite part of quilting. But, I watch TV as I do it and that helps:).

Floralfab 02-02-2013 01:49 PM

Very pretty quilt. You did a wonderful job. Thanks for sharing.

Sarint 02-02-2013 01:52 PM

Excellent! I love blue and white.

ArtsyOne 02-02-2013 01:54 PM

You have a right to be proud - you did a lovely job of fabric placement and the quilting looks beautiful too. Congratulations!

nursie76 02-02-2013 02:28 PM

Thanks all.

Maureen - You can get the pattern for free if you go to Bonnie's website at quiltville.com. Over on the right side column under Free Scrap Quilt Patterns. Then you scroll down to My Blue Heaven and click. It will give you the pattern and can be printed as pdf. Enjoy!

Laurafet - Yeah, I love penguins!

NunnyJo and Artsyone - Thanks for the kind words. The shading and color placement really pretty much fell into place all by its self. It was a scrappy quilt and it could be a controlled scrappy or just totally random. I had hard enough doing scrappy so I chose controlled. I will say after this class with Bonnie, I look at scraps a totally different way!

ArtsyOne - Thanks for you compliment on the quilting. I have a Bernina on a frame and have the Quilt Motion program. It works very nicely. However, I am new at it and haven't progressed past a panto. This one resembles fluffy clouds, so I thought it would follow through nicely on the theme.

You quilt is beautiful, Your Puppy is the same pound puppy my son had, he named it "Cooler" He has always kept it and when my 3 year old grand daughter brought it down from his bedroom (the spare room now) he happened to stop by for a visit, and saw it...It was sooo cute he took it away from her and told me that is his...LOL He has a 2 year old little boy now, and took it home with him, and he is 30 years old...

debcavan 02-02-2013 04:21 PM

yeah, it is beautiful and it for yourself.

DebbE 02-02-2013 04:23 PM

What a wonderful quilt! You did a gorgeous job on it -- the blues make a very 'serene' quilt.

peaceandjoy 02-02-2013 04:26 PM

Lovely! Isn't Bonnie great? You finished faster than I did... i went to 3 workshops she did over 3 days in DE in April... None of them are done yet! However, her latest mystery, "Easy Street" is almost done. I have quilting ADHD.

Rivercity 02-02-2013 04:28 PM

Thanks! Bonnie is super! I had been following her blog and wanted so badly to take a class from her. I traveled about 68 miles one way to take the class and it was so totally worth it! She is so much fun. I will take another class whenever the opportunity presents.

I have a lot of tops waiting to be quilted, but I have all the steps to Easy Street, and it is definitely on my"to do" list. Please post yours when done. I would love to see it!

Your sons reaction is soooo sweet! Interestingly enough, the daughter to whom it belonged just turned 30 on Tuesday! So they must have both had their puppies at the same time.

gabeway 02-03-2013 07:46 AM

It came out beautifully! Congrats!

It Is a beautiful quilt and the best part is that you get to keep it for yourself.
