Some OBW's that I've made

Here are some OBW's that I've made over the years. The two at the bottom were for my two sons. Each one of those were made with a similar but different fish print fabric, which was really fun to work with. I machine quilted them with my DSM, so the quilting isn't great, but I really enjoy making these.

Gosh, those are all so pretty! I too really find the black/white one to be so unique. Really like that one in particular!

Susy 06-18-2014 12:45 PM

You did a great job on all of them! These are my favourites, seems like no matter what fabric you use, they turn out so beautiful? Addicting, eh?

woody 06-18-2014 01:16 PM

Beautiful!!! Makes me want to make another :)

AllyStitches 06-18-2014 01:26 PM

They are totally addicting. I have some others cut already, two that are ready to be pieced, and a top that needs to be finished. I haven't had a place to sew for the last couple of years, but now that our oldest has moved out on his own, I have a sewing room again! It's been three years since I had a spot for me, and 10 years since I had an actual sewing room. I'm very excited!!!

lfstamper 06-18-2014 01:32 PM

Very nice! Bet they loved them.

AllyStitches 06-18-2014 07:30 PM

I made the first one for my sister in law when she graduated from high school. The black and white one was for my sister when she finished her undergraduate work. The pink one was a baby quilt for a friend, and the last two were the ones for my boys. Someday I'll make a quilt for myself!

Cookie46 06-18-2014 11:08 PM

Those are really pretty! I found fabric to make my first one and can't wait to start, but I need to finish another quilt first.

brod71 06-19-2014 10:57 AM

Your quilts are awesome! Are they difficult to make. I have never tried to make one of these before.

These are so beautiful! I've been admiring the OBW quilts and wonder if anyone can tell me what is the best source of information for making one without going somewhere for a class - Thanks!

JoyjoyMarie 06-20-2014 08:10 AM

These are beautiful quilts - I 've never made one (it's on the very long bucket list), but I can see how addicting it must be to make them - they are just gorgeous!!

JanieH 06-20-2014 01:37 PM

All of them are gorgeous and they are ALL my favorite!

AllyStitches 06-20-2014 02:14 PM

They're really not hard at all. They go together pretty quickly and each block is different, so it's super fun!

I have some of that fish fabric with the blue background! It's neat to see one way a OBW might turn out. I so love making these quilts too. Great job on yours!

AllyStitches 06-20-2014 04:02 PM

Thank you!! The only problem with the fish fabric is that sometimes the eyeballs show up in weird places. If I remember correctly, that happened on both of the fish quilts. So I don't think I will use fabric that has eyes in it again. Some of the blocks were just too weird!!

they are all great! gotta say tho', that black and white is a showstopper!! would love to see the fabrics in their intact form.

Caswews 06-20-2014 07:36 PM

Very pretty.. thanks for sharing !

cathyvv 06-20-2014 08:49 PM

Oh, my! They are all beautiful.

I'd go blind trying to do just one of them! I envy your talent, but in a good way!

AllyStitches 06-20-2014 08:53 PM

I learned that my favorite way to finish these is to have a nice thick border or two of the original fabric, and then to back the quilts with the original fabric as well. It gives a great frame of reference for what happened to the fabric in the process. The black and white one was a zebra print. I didn't buy enough to make borders, so that was a mistake on that one. If I remember correctly, I bought the fabric in the bargain bin for $2 per yard, and just bought the whole length of what they had.

OBW quilts are so amazing. One fabric can turn into a beautiful work of art. I have the book, the fabric, now all I need is the bravery to make that first cut into my fabric. I will one of these days. You did a great job on all of yours.

I think there is a tutorial on this quilting board if I'm not mistaken for those interested.

debcavan 06-21-2014 04:01 AM
