Here is a pic of my crumb blocks with just a border around them. It's 42 blocks..6 across and 7 down. I didn't think it would look right without sashings but I like it with just a border.

Maybe you could audition some solid color fabrics as borders with your blocks just to see how you like it. Perhaps it won't work but it's worth a try.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Have a great day.

To Ranger:
Wow, your quilt is georgous! Thanks for showing.I will post a pic. once I finish mine. Don't know when. Haha! I'm not a prolific sewer, you see. .

okiepastor 02-25-2011 06:08 AM

Have you tried it with a yellow or green for sashing ---a 16 patch with sashing?

CloverPatch 02-25-2011 06:09 AM

I would go left field for the sashing. Not white, it washes it out. I would get a color that is not in my blocks and let it be a background color.

Arleners 02-25-2011 06:11 AM

Both way look good, however, I like the unsashed layout better. You lose the movement in the sashed version and it looks very controlled.

I'd call it - "Don't fence me in"

granny5 02-25-2011 06:27 AM

I love all the bright colors, and I really like it without the sashing. That is just my opinion, and believe me I don't have enough experience to give advice. To sash, or not to sash, that is a big question everytime I start a quilt.

nanac 02-25-2011 06:30 AM

I like the sashing better, but IMHO, I would choose something other than white or neutral. It seems kind of bland. I would chaange the sashing to a bright primary color, or even black. Again, just my opinion.

dgmoby 02-25-2011 06:36 AM

ooo...I like it with the white sashing!

Beebee 02-25-2011 06:46 AM

I like them both, but I agree with you. It just looks not quite right with the sashing. Is it the color? or I like what irishrose said about making it 16 patch block..that just may be your answer

thenonnielady 02-25-2011 06:46 AM

I like it with sashing....very cheerful and fresh looking!

Annette Searcy 02-25-2011 07:00 AM

I'm not a long time quilter but if I sashed it I would like it with a colorful sashing maybe red or blue.Ilike it without the extra work of sashing too.

I like it without the sashing. How about prairie points in the same colors as the blocks?

K.P. 02-25-2011 07:22 AM

I really liek the white sashing, then I'd add a narrow red border to stop the action from color in the blocks, then finish with wider outer borders, gonna be really pretty!

scaroca 02-25-2011 07:46 AM

I love it with the sashing

Great idea...I agree! And put the white squares into the centers of 16 patch so it's not up against the white sashing. I think they will really pop then.

I have no black material or I might try that as some of you have suggested. TQ.

I like it broken up by the sashings, and like the white for these. If it were mine, I'd try playing with the placement a little, to get rid of some of the "randomness"... such as turning 4 green corners towards each other, same with 4 red corners, 4 pink. Just play around until you get something you really like. It's going to be pretty, any way you go.

ronnie17 02-25-2011 07:57 AM

I like the white sashing, though I did one with similar fabric in big chunks and no sashing, but black print appliques and in some border pieces. Anything goes.

Quiltbeagle 02-25-2011 08:16 AM

I agree with the others and would get some black...it would really make the colors pop.

bink 02-25-2011 09:20 AM

I like it without the sashing-
if you decide on sashing, I do not think the white(light) is contrasting enough
There is no right or wrong, it is totally personal preference.

vivsqt 02-25-2011 09:22 AM

I have a quilt pattern that I designed. I will try to up load the picture if I can. I am not sure how to get it on this reply. My 4-patches are on point, seperated with a single square of fabric of the same size as your 4-patch, added sashing and cornerstones. It is still simple to piece but adds a lot of character to the quilt.

Stacey 02-25-2011 09:24 AM

The white washes out all the beautiful color. Try a colored sashing or just leave the blocks as they are. They are very beautiful.

Naturalmama 02-25-2011 09:35 AM

I know I'm far from having an expert opinion like many here, but I think it all depends on the "look" you want. I think the white sashing makes it look like a summer beach cottage quilt - nice and light and pretty. The only thing I'd consider is maybe adding one of the colors to an outside border.

Iluv2quilt 02-25-2011 10:06 AM

I like it without sashing, everything goes together well. Nice work!

Retired Quilter 02-25-2011 10:09 AM

I would put a bight colored border on it. One of the colors in the quilt. I think it will look fine. The next time try mixing different size prints. I find that helps some times.

I like it best without sashing!

lmc8 02-25-2011 10:19 AM

Food for thought... I think I would choose to tryout compromising the opinons you've received here and consider grouping the colored blocks into groups of 24 patches between choosen color of solid sashing. Also it might help you to think about how you are going to top-quilt it before you decide on the patchwork layout. I think top quilting shows better on solids and might nicely frame your favored grouping of patterned patches and perhaps rid your "it's not right" feeling. Hmm, varigated top-stitching thread on the white sashing might go well with the Hawain themed fabric.

I agree. the white sashing gives it a fresh modern look.

dotski 02-25-2011 11:55 AM

ADD BLACK !!!!!!!! IT WILL MAKE THE COLORS POP !!!!

QM 02-25-2011 12:26 PM

IMHO, the sashing doesn't improve it. I think, however, that it would be improved with a bit of dark, maybe dark blue or dark green,

majormom 02-25-2011 12:43 PM

I think I like it best unsashed. Just my opinion though.

stephanie765 02-25-2011 01:21 PM

what if you use some of the colored material and add another border or two?

MOMBASIL53 02-25-2011 01:24 PM

I like the one without sashing.....but needs a borders......maybe a white.....then a stripe.

charismah 02-25-2011 01:46 PM

I like the white sashing.

Kitsapquilter 02-25-2011 02:03 PM

I have made blocks using the 4-patch and I am contemplating about sashing also. I think in your case if you were to use 4 of the 4-patch units as one block and then a narrow sashing with a dark color (black, navy blue or a darker green) you might like the effect better than just sashing between each 4-patch. Lay it out like that and see what you think.

vannadine 02-25-2011 02:06 PM

I love it with sashing but would use a color rather than white. I don't have an opinion about which color, maybe ideas will come from those more experienced than me.

Iamquilter 02-25-2011 02:13 PM

Like the first one, but it does need a border.Just my idea

Vat 02-25-2011 02:41 PM

Do you have a dark blue or navy, with maybe a red cornerstone?

I agree with the 16 blocks together and also the corner stones. Also because there are only some white blocks, you could turn them in so they don't touch the white sashing.

I think this is a good idea also.

toodie11 02-25-2011 04:08 PM

I like both, can hardly wait to see what you choose, love the fabric
