Son's Birthday Quilt... from Recycled Shirts
4 Attachment(s)
I love to work with recycled shirt fabric. About a year ago my friend Givio and I embarked on a little quilting adventure. We took an old BOM by a guild in Florida (Jingle All the Way) and did the monthly blocks in shirts, rather than Christmas fabrics, as the original BOM was. We each made two of the blocks each month, and then swapped the extra ones with each other. Somewhere along the line I felt this was supposed to be a special quilt for my youngest son... and now it is! His birthday was yesterday but he won't get this until he comes home for Thanksgiving next week.
I quilted each block individually, QAYG, so I had more freedom to do turns and curves with my walking foot. I love that method! Once done I needed to make the quilt a bit bigger, so I used 3" sashings with inserted batting strips. This was my first try at that and it worked out much better than I expected. Last of all I needed to add the same 3" border around the outside, to match the sashings. Hope you like Luke's quilt. that binding is great too. Does Givio's look like yours? I'll bet it doesn't. Well done!

Very nicely done !!

It's perfect. I love that it is masculine. You ladies came up with a great idea!!
wow, looks great
Oh, My, you have a beautiful quilt to my eyes. You have made a quilt that anyone would want.
What a great way to make a sampler quilt extra special...I've never used men's shirts, but I have seen a lot of fabulous quilts by people who have :-) Your's turned out really well.
Beautiful quilt. I'm sure your son will love it.
What? Not the expected red binding! lol The light plaid is perfect, and great contrast to the sashes.
My son is getting a different sampler quilt on Thanksgiving-- hopefully, if I get the binding on it in time! My plaid blocks are waiting for inspiration in regards to the setting. I'm planning to make more than one quilt from them, so I need to add something to what I've got going. |
Great quilt!

it looks absolutely wonderful. He will love it. i was just thinking of doing quilt as you go with blocks and not sections.. thanks.

Kalama, we mostly made our blocks with different plaids. So each month we would make two of the same block, with different fabrics in each. Givio hasn't decided on settings yet, either. She is letting her blocks ruminate, LOL. Each of our quilts will be 'one of a kind'! |
Wonderful quilt.

That's a gorgeous quilt!! Great work on your part!
I love, love , love this quilt. To me it has a prairie feel to it. The quilt as you go really made the blocks pop. Well done.
Bonnie that is a beautiful quilt, and your son is going to love it. He must be very proud of all your talents.
What a charming quilt and a fun idea! Did you decide on the same red for the center of the block or any just any red you gals had on hand? givio...it's your turn now...but have fun ruminating..
Beautiful quilt. I have been working with lots and lots of scraps. Adding sashes, etc. to get them used up. I need to be more creative.
That is one super quilt. BrendaK

Gorgeous quilt.
Yes, I like his quilt!!!
Great work of heart (art)! ;) Don't forget your label. I like the 3" sashing. Did you use a specific tute for your QAYG?
Great quilt-your son will love it. I really like plaids for guy quilts.
I have been pondering taking a try at QAYG, but the methods I have found include sashing on the back. I really like your one piece backing. Did you baste it to your completed top and then do additional quilting? |
Wow what a great job...and a nice variety of shirt fabrics for each of the blocks.
What a great remembrance for your son! I wish I had been quilting when my stepdad passed....I would have LOVED to have done this.
Great job, sewbiz and givio! |
Bet he will love this masculine quilt and all the wonderful shirtings in it. Your quilting is wonderful by the way.
Wonderful masculine quilt.
Bonnie your quilt is beautiful. I’m sure Luke will treasure it forever.
Kudos for all the straight sewing with checks and plaids. Re-purposed shirts make a wonderful quilt.
That’s fantastic Sewbiz- You did a great job with that sashing and the binding is perfect for the feel of the quilt!

There is a very good tute in our tutorials section for adding wide sashing and inserted batting... by Kassaundra. It's basically the same way I did this one. |
Great job, SBG. Love your finished project, and Luke should be very happy with his delayed Birthday gift.! Love your colors in it and your quilting job. Maybe someday I will, meanwhile, I can enjoy looking at beautiful quilts on QB.
