This is the second stained glass quilt I've created. The first one was entered into the Texas State Fair and received an honorable mention. This particular quilt took me 10 years to complete, simply because of all the applique involved and life getting in the way. I call this The Rose Window, inspired by cathedral windows. I created a quilting stitch (I call the Waffle Stitch) on the first quilt, and used it again on this quilt around the middle rose. Tell me what you think.

Thank you so much. The close up of the center rose shows the stitch. It's a simple L stitch with a reverse every other row. I did it by accident on the first quilt and loved the results so much that I used it on this quilt. It's easier if you have even circles to guide you, but if you are OCD about measurements, you shouldn't have any problem. The stitch has been copyrighted via the State Fair (I documented the creation of the stitch in my quilt description), and other public forums where I uploaded the photos of it.

Yes, the waffle stitch is the quilting stitch I created. Before I claimed it as my creation, I checked a ton of sites and information and found that a waffle stitch is used in knitting and crochet, but is completely different from the quilting stitch. I love how the block really looks like a giant waffle when it's done.

I'm a bit picky about quilting. I think machine quilting turns out beautiful, but I prefer quilt work that is done by hand. It emphasizes the beauty of the quilt. Anybody can quilt by machine, but handwork seems to be so much more impressive to me. Thank you so much for your compliments everyone.

Had I been able to work on it non-stop, it probably wouldn't have taken me that long. I worked on several of these blocks while caring for my mother through her chemo-therapy, and then to distract myself the week of her funeral. It has seen me through my divorce, losing my home, and some very depressing moments in my life. How ironic that I finished it in a hotel room after being displaced from a house fire. The irony is that I found inspiration for this quilt from cathedral glass windows, and received much restoration of my spirit by working on it during rough times in my life.

I can understand why it took you 10 years to finish this one!! It's beautiful!! When I read your story of how this quilt came to be it put a smile on my face. I hope you can understand how I mean that. Not that it went through all those horrible times with you but that it restored your spirit.

Yes, a lot of work, and a lot of finger pricking. But, seeing the results, it was worth it. It looks far more beautiful on the bed than it did in my lap or on the quilting frame.

Thank you so much for the compliments. I'm working on a black and gold chenille quilt now. I make the chenille myself, on the edges of the pieces. Will post a picture after I prep the first finished block. One is finished, but the chenille is not. I have to put it through the dryer before the threads are right.

Oh my goodness!! Sounds like your quilt has been the constant thread through all your troubles! You have stitched your life into it! I hope it brings you great comfort now.

So far, it has. Thank you. Only fellow quilters can relate to what I'm talking about. I receive so much peace when I'm quilting. I've thought a lot of thoughts, replayed conversations, and mentally replayed experiences while working on it. Now, I look at particular blocks and my experiences reappear as though they occurred just yesterday. This one particular quilt does have a lot of life stitched into it.

This is not the one I entered into the Fair. I started this quilt immediately after I did the first one. The first one was a little more simpler. It was 9 blocks (panes) of floral designs made to look like stained glass panes, separated by rows of colored squares, just like this one. The bordering was more colorful, paisley fabrics with jewel tones. It was beautiful as well, and appraised at $1500.00. This one is more complex than that one was.

Thank you Mrs. B. Everyone has so many kind words. I've never joined a quilting guild, because around here they seem to be very cliqueish like in high school. That's one of the reasons my quilt only received an honorable mention. I was, more or less, a newcomer to the quilting community, and my first stained glass quilt was one of the few quilts I did in the beginning of my experience with quilts.

I love the photo you used for your avatar. It reminds me of the blocks I did for the stained glass quilt I entered in the state fair. Beautiful work on that. So many stained glass patterns have the leading looking too thick and unrealistic. I like the applique version

I cannot even imagine the work that you have put into this quilt. How stunning! What I love most about it is the small block sections that are so jewel colored that you could swear they really are stained glass.
