Which method do you use. With the bias tape or the black background and then the applique pieces are placed on top with spaces.

I have someone very keen that I make one for the house, and he has never really shown any real interest for something for the house before, but he loved those.

Lets see if I could explain :
I have a piece for the background then did the squares in bias binding and then placed the applique flowers on top no stitching is done and then placed the bias binding on top and am now stitching the bias on. So all the stitching is done on the bias binding and not with any of the other fabrics.
