I don't have the name of the quilt, yet. I will get it next time I see her. Like I said, I want to make this one, too.

I marked the spine on the first one I did, transferred that to freezer paper, then used that to mark the spines on the rest of them. The spines for the border was a wavy ruler, then I added the turn backs. I also used rulers for the continuous curves in the stars and half-square triangles in the borders. The spins were done with a circle template, starting in the centers, going out to a corner, then coming back on that same line (don't move the ruler!!!).

My machine has about a 16" throat, when the ruler base is attached. It was nip and tuck to get the vertical feathers in one pass. I think I had 1/2" extra top and bottom.

Oh Shelly, thank for telling us about marking the spine. You must be fabulous drawing all the turnbacks! One more silly question...is the quilt stiff feeling with all those feathers? I am planning to try something similar to this with my Buttery HST quilt, well, lots and lots of feather and I'm curious about how stiff it will be just using the Warm and Natural 100% cotton batting.

WOW! That is lovely! I would love to be able to do quilting like that..you are very talented. How long does it take to something like that? What is your blog addy, Id love to check it out and see what else you have done.

That is a great quilt! I love feathers! My ladies at church groan when they see feathers on a quilt, but I love them. They are always happy when the feathers are done and say how gorgeous they are on a quilt. Thanks for telling us how you make them. I love how generous quilters are.

With a cotton batting, I would expect this would be stiff. I used Quilter's Dream Puff and it's not stiff. I've also used Quilter's Dream Wool on a quilt that was heavily quilted and it was also still soft when done.

Thanks sooo much for the info Shelley! I'll get some either Dream Puff or maybe try the wool...I haven't tried it to quilt with yet. I have done some heavy quilting on cotton and it is stiff, thats what had me worried. Thanks again..now I have to go back a drool all over your blog...could you tell I've been very messy there??

The quilt is gorgeous, but the QUILTING is astonishing! I'd give anything to learn how to do this!

Shelley 02-01-2011 08:19 AM

This was a 'blast from the past'!! I'd forgotten about this quilt!

I just checked - I never posted the pattern name!! I'm going to the studio today, I'll see if I can find and post when I get back home. I did eventually make the quilt - and re-named it "Stars in My Garden" As I recall, the book only had the picture of the block and I made the quilt from that.
