This is my first star Strata topper. I think I did pretty good choosing colors - its for fall. I do have one question for those of you who've made one. How did you bind yours? Did you do a pillow case method and not bind it or did you quilt it and then do a regular binding on it?

Very pretty! I did the pillowcase thing on the ones I made. I really enjoyed making them. They all have such a different look to them, but all are pretty. Blessings to all. Kathryn

Ohhhh....that is just beautiful. I love the warm fall colors. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

quiltinggirl 10-16-2010 04:16 PM

Love it!! Very pretty. :)

Pzazz 10-16-2010 04:16 PM

I haven't made one yet, but have fabrics to make a C'mas one. Planning to do the pillowcase method to finish it...seems like an easy finish for this one.

I love the colours you have used...very striking!!

It is really fun to see everyone's combinations! I think you nailed Fall.

Bobbinchick 10-16-2010 04:38 PM

What I did was put the warm and natural batting down first, then the backing and the star spin on top of the batting, right sides together, Then sew around the star spin and leave an opening for turning. The opening needs to be just large enough to put yor hand in. Then turn it right side out and poke out the corners and then hand sew the opening closed. Then you can put a few pins in it and then go ahead and quilt it. I used invisible thread and just quilted from corner to corner. I have mine on the table also. your is so pretty with the green in it. Mine has some brown in it and my mother wants one for Christmas, but I'm not sure what colors she wants. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

I haven't seen this design before. It's very pretty. It will look great wherever you put it!

That's what I was thinking would be the easiest way. I saw some really pretty fabrics at Craft Warehouse they had black, gold and reds and were Christmas fabrics. I might go back and buy some and make another one of these for my step mom & dad for Christmas. I think it could be really striking.

Somebody posted a link a while back I just tried to find the thread but don't remember the title :-( Sorry. I might make another and rewrite the directions and take pictures as I go...

You can go to search at the top of the page and put in
Star Strata to find it.

Very pretty!

A great pattern is by Jae's Attic. She calls it Crazy Eight Strip Teaser-A Table Topper. Directions are really good, and has color pictures.
The web site is: www.sewwhat-quilting.com

Really pretty! This is on my to-do list too (tho it looks a bit intimidating)

SharonAnne 10-17-2010 09:19 AM

Good for you. Very lovely. I just bought the pattern and the first paragraph boggled my mind. Not sure I am up for this yet. Maybe after Christmas gifts are done.

The pattern I used really wasn't that hard. You make strip sets (5) of either 7 or 8 fabrics going light to dark. Then you cut triangles out from the strip sets. I did the 8 fabrics from each strip set you get 4 triangles 2 light 2 dark and 1 small triangle. Then you sew the little ones to the big ones and then sew those together.

Awesome! Love the colors.

ScrapQuilter 10-17-2010 09:28 AM

Your topper turned out so nice............. I am looking forward to making one... Just need to find extra time.. I know that is a problem for most quilters.
Hope mine turns out as nice as yours.

boohoofish 10-17-2010 11:22 AM

I did regular binding - its a lot of pivoting but was not all that difficult (and I was a new quilter/sewer at the time).
Your colors are gorgeous.

Jim's Gem 10-17-2010 12:17 PM

Beautiful!!!

butterflyquilter 10-17-2010 12:46 PM

What is the pillowcase method? I have not heard of this.

You put your front and your back together (right sides together)and the batting on the backside of the back and sew around the whole thing leaving an opening to pull it through to the right side. Then you don't have to use a binding. It's something I use more on small projects like baby quilts. I also use it when I have made prairie points as a finish. Hopefully I explained it well.
