Inspiring. I plan to do a OBW later this year or early next. I have chosen a Robert Kaufman fabric that is designed by Peggy Toole called Florentine 3 in the pewter colorway. If any of you are familiar with this fabric, I would appreciate your opinions as to whether or not this will make a really nice OBW. I can only hope I can do as well as this one.

To answer your question: for a OBW the amount of fabric you need and the finished size of the quilt all depends upon the size of the print in the fabric you choose. To make a hexagon OBW you will need six vertical repeats of the pattern in your yardage. Larger prints make better OBWs because there is a lot more variety in the patterns and colors of your finished hexagons. Plus, a larger print yields a larger quilt. "I Dreamed of the Milky Way" used a large print fabric and turned out to be roughly 5' x 6'. More of a couch quilt or end of bed quilt or wall hanging. I used Maxine Rosenthal's book One Block Wonders, which I highly recommend to anyone who would like to make one: http://www.amazon.com/One-Block-Wond...5665553&sr=8-1 Actually her book is what made me take the leap and start to learn quilting after years of being an enthusiastic observer.
