Have you ever done stippling by hand? It' s a lot of work but I think it is worth to try....

(The measurement tape you see is metric.)

that's a lot of little stitches! nice even ones too! I'd like to see the rest of the quilt.

Borntohandquilt 04-23-2010 06:22 AM

It's still in progress. I will post some when it's finished!

Carol Carter 04-23-2010 06:24 AM

Awesome job with the hand quilting. Such tiny, even stitches.

Wine Woman 04-23-2010 06:29 AM

That is beautiful! How long is it taking you to do the pictured area?

Well, I think it takes me 1,5 to 2 hours.

Debbie B 04-23-2010 01:45 PM

I sure wish I could hand quilt like that! I gave up & went to machine quilting because my stitches are so big. Your stitches are so very tiny & even. Beautiful...can't wait to see more.

Beautiful quilting!

Me too.

barnbum 04-23-2010 05:35 PM

Oh my gosh--I'd climb the walls if I tried that. I'm in awe.

KiwiQuilter 04-23-2010 05:46 PM

That is the most incredible hand quilting I have ever seen. What an accomplishment.

littlehud 04-23-2010 06:47 PM

Wow, that is awesome. What beautiful little stitches. Great job.

Borntohandquilt 04-23-2010 11:30 PM

Thank you all for your nice comments and your compliments - that really makes me proud. I'm really an avid handquilter and I try to do my best to keep this old tradition alive. In Germany we almost don't have a quilting tradition and many people still don't know what a quilt is!
If you want to see more of my work you can have a look on the link in my signature. I will post some pictures here from time to time.

KiwiQuilter 04-24-2010 01:02 AM

Thanks for sharing the link to your blog. I'll definitely have a look at your other projects. :)

kwhite 04-24-2010 04:49 AM

I would love to learn how to do this. Is there a video somewhere of how it is done? Perhaps you could do one for your site.

Borntohandquilt 04-24-2010 06:56 AM

No, I'm sorry, there is no video. But it is quite easy to do the stippling - just quilt the lines very near to each other! :)
John Flynn published a book about stippling and trapunto. I don't know if it is still available.

sbeddingfield 04-24-2010 06:58 AM

I love to quilt by hand - so relaxing - but have sort of just started. How long have you been doing it and how many have you made before getting this good?
Your work is so beautiful.
Thanks for sharing

I've started quilting about 20 years ago and I think it takes me 5 or 6 years to quilt like I do today. I am still learning with every new quilt I start! The quality of the material is very important, therefore I am very discerning (is this the right word for it?) with fabrics, threads and battings. Also designing a wholecloth is always a big challenge and when I have finshed one I always think I could have done better...

You are too modest...you are an artist!

scrapsoftime 04-24-2010 08:13 AM

OMG... this is awesome! By hand? Here, I thought machine stippling was a lot of work, lol!!! :)

Katrine 04-24-2010 09:36 AM

Absolutely beautiful work - unbelievably tiny neat stitches. You have lots of patience - and skill!

coastienest 04-24-2010 10:05 AM

You must have the patience of a saint. It's beautiful

mpspeedy 04-24-2010 11:25 AM

WOW! I have only hand stippled once and that was enough. YOur quilting is gorgeous.

TeresaT 04-24-2010 12:42 PM

You are truly a master quilter in every sense of the word. Your quilting is beautiful!!!

roselady 04-24-2010 03:32 PM

I love to hand quilt, but I have a long way to go, to get to where you are. Is your stippling done in straight lines or curves? Any help you give those of us learning, it would be appreciated! Thanks.

craftybear 04-24-2010 06:02 PM

wow, thanks for sharing!

Rachelcb80 04-24-2010 06:15 PM

Oh my goodness, that is just beyond beautiful! I admire you for your patience and skill.

It is done in straight lines. When you look at the picture the lines go vertically.

It is interesting to me that people in Germany don't know what a quilt is. How did you learn? You do such beautiful work. I could only hand quilt if we just had to go through one layer of fabrci... but then, that wouldn't be a quilt, would it? LOL

:D

Naiscoot 04-25-2010 04:58 AM

Lots of stitching, wonderful job. How big is the project. I have a frame, did a queen once, but wasn't pleased with stitches, may try again this summer up at the cottage, on an easy pattern. Practice makes perfect they say.
