Stitch in the Ditch.. KICK in the Head!!

I've done work for a friend for several years and she never questions what I ask for, or my suggestions for quilting. So its my own fault that this piece was totally stitch in the ditch, (with a little meander in the maroon sections). It took me a week and after 3 days I hated the piece. But it's done now and it does look good. I DO have to remind her, though, to IRON her backing as well as the front. (She can clean off the lint!)

It looks great! I always wonder with SITD on a pattern like that....do you stay right in the sewing line or a little left or right. If you go a little left or right then where they cross it looks funny.

woody 02-03-2013 12:07 PM

I hate STID too but for some quilts it just looks RIGHT :)

You did a great job, the quilt and the quilting are fantastic!

Joan Abear 02-03-2013 12:08 PM

That is a pretty quilt your quilting looks really good.

When the colour contrast is so great I stay on the darker material. I try to stay less than 16th of an inch to the edge, but that really depends on the sewing. If the seams are straight, and hers were really even, then its relatively easy to hold a ruler against the line and follow. Can't do diagonals freehand. And yes there is a lot of starting and stopping to make those breaks where the lattice passes under the top pieces.

The fabric was ancient from a close out a few years ago.

I hate SID unless it is my own quilt. I am real careful about pressing and which way I press to make it easier for the SID. I admire that you did it on someone else's.

maryb119 02-03-2013 12:42 PM

SID is very difficult with a long arm! You did a great job!!

joyce888 02-03-2013 12:43 PM

Very pretty and the quilting is great.

knlsmith 02-03-2013 12:50 PM

Woo wee! That's a ton of work! Great job :)

miss_ticky2 02-03-2013 12:54 PM

I can imagine how tedious that was but that is a striking quilt and you did a wonderful job of the quilting

fxsts93kf 02-03-2013 02:56 PM

As much as you didn't like doing it I think your quilting is perfect for the pattern! And it took me a few looks to notice that, if I'm not mistaken that you quilted around each turtle! Really beautiful!

dunster 02-03-2013 03:38 PM

Lovely quilting, and SID was just right for it. I never iron my backing. I load it on the longarm, tighten up the first section and spritz with water, just a little. You can just see the wrinkles disappearing. When that section is dry (or almost dry) roll to the next section and repeat. You might not want to take the time to do that with a customer's quilt, but it sure beats ironing.

That's an interesting suggestion though. The issue was she had washed and dryed the material and the wrinkles were set in.

You did a wonderful job! In fact, it looks almost as pretty on the back as on the front.

Peggy Jeanne 02-03-2013 07:42 PM

A straight line is so difficult on a long arm. You did a great job.

nunnyJo 02-04-2013 05:19 AM

great quilt and love the SID

gabeway 02-04-2013 05:25 AM

Both the quilt and quilting look great! SITD really works.

Homespun 02-04-2013 07:37 AM

Yes, press the backing. I've learned the hard way!!

oma66 02-04-2013 07:58 AM

I'd say you hit perfection all the way.

mighty 02-04-2013 08:18 AM

I've used this method with fabric that's been washed and dried, as well as with unwashed fabric that has that pesky center fold. It always seems to work. I think it's the stretching on the frame that makes it work.

QUILTNMO 02-04-2013 04:30 PM

you did a nice job!!!

nannyrick 02-04-2013 04:39 PM

That is a beautiful SID. Must have been a lot of work. Pretty quilt too.

ube quilting 02-04-2013 05:09 PM

A stunning quilt and you did a great job.

adamae 02-05-2013 05:12 AM

Just a good reason for buying when you see the color you love!!!!!! Later, you will find the right project for it. I have some colors that I refuse to cut up because it is so beautiful to me.

DebbE 02-05-2013 05:23 AM

What a wonderful job you did! The back looks as terrific as the front!

Pieces2 02-05-2013 05:56 AM

Great quilt, and the quilting is also great. :)

margie77072 02-05-2013 06:26 AM

I love this quilt. The SITD was a great choice. What is the name of this quilt. I think the design is awesome. And....drumroll please....It uses only two fabrics and I think my picky daughter will like it. I sure do!!

ccthomas 02-05-2013 06:39 AM

Quilting looks very good for this quilt pattern and fabric choice.
