String quilt for Family Reunion
3 Attachment(s)
My family reunion is this Sunday August 12 and i wanted to make a quilt for the raffle. after seeing the string quilts on this board, I really wanted to make one. Here is my result. i had a great time putting the blocks together and reliving each string-this was so and so's baby quilt, this was my DD's dress' DS's boxers, etc. the quilting didn't come out quite as nice as i would've liked(it always looks better in my mind), but all in all i am very happy with it. i posted it on FB and got lots of positive feedback to stroke my ego. ha ha
it is lap sized and did not even make a dent in my string stash! this quilt was virtually cost free-the backing fabrics came from Salvation Army store, strings from my scraps. i did buy the black Kona because I wanted the centers the same. the batting was from my stash of batting. now i need to make about 50 more to use up my stash! LOL |
It looks great! Your quilting really looks good too. I love string quilts, I want to make one with Christmas fabrics, but it's not gonna happen this year.
Very pretty! It will make a great prize for the lucky winner!

I love string quilts, too!

Very nice. I also like the black and how you used it. I am looking forward to going a string quilt as soon as I finish my 2 WIPs.

Good job! I am sure family members will admire it.
Beautiful and I am finding black is a very good addition to many quilts. Really pops the other colors. Lucky person that wins it.
someone will be very lucky. it is a wonderful prize, love the black, sure adds dimension to the blocks
Great job! I love the great variety and the narrow strips you've used. I've never made a string quilt, but I can see I'll have to give it a go.
Good job. Like the black accents, it really sets it off.
Great job on this!! Someone will be very happy to have it! The black is a great accent too!!
I like your string quilt, too. I am very fond of these and need to get started on another one. I like the black in yours!
That is terrific, great job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Great job!

I like the black in the center if each block and especially, the narrow black separator border and then to top it off, I really like the string triangle border. I saved it to my Quilting Ideas folder. I love string quilts. Have you considered "Dwirling" on the quilt top? I really like that quilting technique on a string. Here is the video on youtube for that technique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgX4Ld_lFw8 It adds motion to a string quilt.
Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments! I had great fun making this string quilt and learned a few things along the way, too.
Dollyo, thanks for the link to the video. I'm not sure that i could "dwirl" but a soft wave repeated all over the quilt would be really pretty. I wish the video would have shown the whole quilt when she was finished with it. Today is the day of the reunion. I will post again when we get home and let you know how it went . |
Usually not a fan of string quilts but this one is beautiful-Really love the black & the half blocks makes it look different than most I've seen! Great job of quilting it too!
Very pretty! I definitely wanna make one of these!
I've been cleaning up my "scrap" box the last couple of days and have a ton of strips now for my string quilts. As you say, the strings seem to multiply and I never make more than a small dent in them. But this is such a fun, mindless quilt to make and they always turn out unique and seem to be enjoyed by those receiving them. I do use the pattern to reduce stash, but I'm not a do it yourself quilter so usually send them out for a minimal charge. Do you quilt your own? I like your use of the solid inner border. Really makes a sharp looking layout....:)

Great job and quilt!
Wendig, thanks for the compliment and yes I quilted this one myself. I do send some out to a LAQ, but this one i did myself. This quilt was originally supposed to have another black border and then a scrappy binding, but I forgot to add it. By the time i realized it, i already had the back cut to size. So i put a black binding instead. Next time - haha.
The quilt ended up being auctioned for the equivalent(sp) of $70. Not too bad. |
A great example of a string quilt. I love any kind of scrap quilt, and strings are one of favorites. Yours is truly beautiful.
Very pretty! You did a great job!
