Just starting to assemble the quilt for my granddaughter, couldn't wait for ALL the blocks to be done to see how it's going to look.

I love it. :-D The colors are so bright and cheerful, perfect for a 9 year old girl's bedroom and it matches all the bedroom accessories that my daughter got her for their new house.

Very pretty! I like the colors!

Barb_MO 02-13-2010 03:04 PM

That is going to be very pretty. Love all the colors. Are you machine appliquéing the flowers on the center block?

pittsburgpam 02-13-2010 03:05 PM

I'll have more yummy colors together very soon. Almost half the blocks are done, half the sashing is cut out, etc At least half a quilt should be done this weekend!

pittsburgpam 02-13-2010 03:07 PM

Yes, they are machine appliqued. I am using Sharon Schamber's raw edge applique method. It is really easy and quick using fabric glue on the edges instead of fusable (which I don't like using).

redquilter 02-13-2010 03:16 PM

Very pretty.

SulaBug 02-13-2010 03:22 PM

VERY pretty! I love it. :)

thismomquilts 02-13-2010 05:36 PM

Nice and I love the way you did what will be triangles - made them squares and, I'm assuming, you will just trim them to make them into triangles???

craftybear 02-13-2010 06:22 PM

Wow, I like the colors and will be great when you get it all done. Do you know how you are going to quilt it yet?

Decisions? Decisions?

Karen

maryb119 02-13-2010 06:23 PM

Love it! Please post the finished quilt.

pittsburgpam 02-13-2010 06:26 PM

Yes, the square sashing blocks will be trimmed to 1/4" along with the edge triangles when it's done.

I am thinking of outline quilting of the petals, the inner and outer row. Maybe just continue that outline in echo quilting the entire block. Haven't decided about the sashing yet. Maybe just a continuous line with 4-petal flowers to look a little like the block flowers.

marsye 02-13-2010 06:56 PM

Awesome!

Of course I'll post as it is constructed. :-D I have everything cut out except for 52 white flower petals (have 3 strips of fabric ready for them). 13 of the blocks are totally done, 3 more are ready to machine applique.

I am making 2 blocks of each color so I separated them into two batches of 16. I also separated the colored petals into two batches, there will be two flowes of each color.

Pittsburgpam: your machine raw-edge applique looks very neat. I was just watching Sharon's video on this and hadn't tried it yet. (I have a quilt top done that needs flowers appliqued on it, and have been debating whether to turn under and machine quilt or do raw edge.) Some machine applique books say to use tear-away stabilizer, but I don't want to do this if I don't need to. Did you use stabilizer on yours??

No, I didn't use stabalizer. The foundation block and the applique fabric are heavily starched. After I do the applique I VERY lightly spray starch on the back of the block and press it from the back. It gets rid of any distortion from the sewing.

Cute cute!!! Almost makes me wish I had a little girl!! :D

mimee4 02-14-2010 06:36 AM

Absolutely yummy. She will love it.

Barb_MO 02-14-2010 06:45 AM

Yes, you are so organized...what is the stack of fabric to the back of you triangles?

pittsburgpam 02-14-2010 07:28 AM

I work better when the space is organized. When I have the stuff that I'm working on layed out, know what's done or not, what's cut or not, I feel more in control of what I'm doing instead of the chaos controlling me. :-D

The stack at the back is the 8 1/2" sashing strips, 80 of them, with the blocks between them in front, 3 of each color, and the colored petals in front of that, 4 of each.

sewsue 02-14-2010 08:18 AM

Love the block and the quilt is going to look great when it is completed

I have the 3rd row done so far today. I've been back and forth, stopping in the sewing room for a little bit of work, then out again. I'll sew the sashing row to the row of blocks before sewing the section to the rest. It's easier to handle that way.

5 more rows to go and I realized that my granddaughter's birthday is the last week of this month. I could probably get it done by then but I have half the blocks left to applique still. If I don't feel comfortable with doing an outline or custom quilting yet, I could use the curlicue hearts panto that I have. I think that would go OK with the quilt. The colored flower petals are heart shaped.

Sharon - NC 02-14-2010 02:47 PM

You're right, those colors are great!

Oklahoma Suzie 02-14-2010 02:49 PM

Ellis' Granny B 02-15-2010 06:35 AM

Whata an amazing job. Thank you for all of the lessons: Organization of your work space, applique tips, pressing tips, color schemes, layouts, etc. It will look fantastic when you are finished and your granddaughter will be thrilled.
