This is my sun bonnet Sue quilt top and I designed it. It has 12 squares of sue embroidered with four roles of 1930s fabric in a nine patch square. Please tell me what you think of the border. I think the border does not do justice for the quilt. I have been told its too bright, what do you all think? Should I keep the border as light yellow or go with a different color?
I love the Sues, you did a great job. For what it is worth, and since you asked, I think it needs a red border, the yellow just seems too light to me to really make the girls pop. If not red, maybe just a brighter color.
I think you have done a marvelous job on the quilt. The border doesn't seem to reflect anything from the blocks. Do you perhaps have any leftovers from the blocks. A piano key border might set it off better.
Very cute
I was thinking a pink border. The yellow is just too light. Great Job, though! The blocks and embroidery work are beautiful!!
When I went to the quilt store I did not take the top. So she was going by the description. I wanted a fabric that didn't take away from the girls and 1930's fabric. So we decided on this yellow gigham. It was pretty when I bought it. But now that I have sewn it on I'm not happy. When I showed it to other friends they say wow what a bright yellow. But in the store it didn't look as bright. I don't want the border to stand out. I want the girls and the 9 patch to be the seen up front not the border.

Beautiful..I love the Yellow border. Is the color in keeping with the period of the repro fabrics? You could always use a very small red then the yellow as a second.
Whatever you decide the quilt is lovely. |
I don't know why the pictures did not come out brighter. But the yellow is a bright yellow next to the quilt.
Yes the color is a yellow gingham. I wanted all the colors go with the 1930's period. I just love that time period.

Your blocks are beautiful  The yellow just doens't seem to fit in with any other color , sorry. I like the thought of a piano key border
I'm leaning towards doing the piano keys because at a quilt show I bought a jelly row.And still have a lot left over.Or material with tiny hearts in a pink fabric. I saw that at Hobby Lobby.

I also think a red border would do it justice. I love the blocks you embroidered. They are so cute!
Darling!
I think red border would be nice but what ever you decide it will be Beautiful,I love SB sue's aren't they so cute you do such neat work can we please see it when you have finish your borders? Please(:)
I vote for a red border. The small red squares in the 16-patch catch my eye first. A red border will tie in with that. I don't see yellow in the 9-patch unless the yellow is in your embroidery.
Wow! What a masterpiece! I say red border too. I want to try sun bonnet sue sometime. It brings me back to my childhood! Beautiful!
Very pretty Love the sunbonnet sues
the quilt is stunning but i feel it needs either red or med blue border to show off the blocks more. This one is paling it, excuse me for being blunt though?
Yes I will post it after I change that yellow border. Now what do I do with that yellow material? Hmm

Just keep the yellow for another quilt!!
Maybe a baby quilt. That gives me many ideas?

That is such a cute quilt. I agree and red might be a better border.
Pretty pretty!
Great quilt :) Colors from the quilt top should be carried over into the border. The yellow seems to stand alone.
Maybe a narrow border in a darker solid color (to separate a pieced border) carried from the quilt top. Then maybe add a pieced border the same as your squares in the quilt top. This pieced border then will tie the quilt together. Lay a few fabrics (maybe a red or a blue) along side the quilt covering the yellow border and see the differences. I would make my binding the same color as the narrow border. This is just my opinion and what I would do. But it is your quilt, the final decision should be yours. |
I agree red boarder, if you have any red material put it next to the quilt and you will see how your embroidery will stand out. It's a beatiful quilt.
It sure is a pretty quilt! I also think red would be my choice, but I still love it the way it is!
I like the soft look of it the way it is. You did an outstanding job with it!!
Love the embroidered Sue's. I'm not really digging the border color, either. Oh, and by the way, those are 16 patch blocks. 9 Patch blocks are 3 by 3. Yours appear to be 4 by 4, making them 16 patch.
How cute!
You did a beautiful job on this quilt, very pretty!!! :D:D:D
I like the idea of a red border, or if you want a little more subtle, a medium blue. |
I think a red border would be awesome. It would really make your quilt "pop". It's a beautiful quilt and the yellow border doesn't do it justice.
I agree with LaurieE, the small red squares caught my eye first. |
The border just seems to sit there, unrelated to the quilt. Not sure if it's the color or what, but it just doesn't fit somehow.

I added the red the border to the yellow border, and it does bring out the colors of the quilt. Thank you for your help.
I would trim the yellow border down to be only a sashing of about 1" then add the red border.
Love it!!!!
It looks very pretty with the red border added! I bet in person you can see more of the yellows in your SunBonnet Sue's tying it with your beautiful yellow border! It really shines now that you have added the red border! Beautiful quilt!!
That is pretty. You did a great job. The red border makes it stand out! Love it!

It is beautiful! Maybe a border made from your 1930's fabrics.
