I had the great pleasure of meeting Donald Locke and his wife at a quilt show in Owen Wisconsin. It was an amazing piece of art. Has anyone else seen it? Here are a few photo's from the show.

Statistics: There are 51,816 pieces of fabric. Each piece measures 1/2 inch on edge. 350 different fabrics. The entire quilt is 67 inches high and 183 inches wide.
Amazing!!!

This is only Dr.Locke's 2nd quilt. He is from Texas and a retired dentist. This quilt was pieced on a feather weight. His first quilt is a picture of him and his wife. They travel all over the world with this quilt. Isn't it amazing?

Qbee 03-08-2011 05:58 PM

Wow!! Seriously......that is breathtaking!

Maggie_Sue 03-08-2011 05:58 PM

I have a photo of him holding that quilt but have to crop it first.
nana katie have you seen this? Being from Texas I would think you have seen this.

I have seen this quilt before and it still amazes me.

DawnMarie 03-08-2011 07:44 PM

Yes, I have met Donald Locke too. He came to our quilt show in September 2010. He had one heck of a long-armer!
I know that he spent so much time picking out and arranging his fabrics to make this and piece them together.
I've often wondered why he didn't use fusible 1 inch grid when he did this. Maybe it would have been faster, maybe not.
Either way, he did a wonderful job and it took my breath away looking at the piecing and the quilting. What an amazing accomplishment.

DawnMarie 03-08-2011 07:46 PM

Oh! There's more info on it here:

Have you seen the same picture made completely out of dryer lint?

Amazing!!!

He sure knows how to keep his mind going! I've considered taking a pixel mosaic pattern and adapting it for quilting, but not one with that high of count. Amazing! Where's he hang it (5'7" x 15'3")? That's a lot of wall. How does he work with that many different stacks of 1" blocks? Truly amazing!

sueisallaboutquilts 03-08-2011 07:58 PM

What a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I would love to see it.
Thanks for the pic!

YES!! Saw this at one of the local churches a few years back. When I first saw it my breath was literally taken away. And he is such a nice man. He spent so much time walking me thru the process and pointing out all the neat little things about this quilt. It is a must see for anyone! You will never forget it.

greensleeves 03-08-2011 08:23 PM

This was at the Houston Quilt Festival one year and hung above the rest of the quilts-it looks like a painting if you cannot see it up close. Amazing is all I can say.

emerald46 03-09-2011 06:48 AM

Seen it before and still in awe. Not a picture in the world can do this quilt justice. It is a jaw-dropper.

Stacey 03-09-2011 07:05 AM

If I remember correctly he said that the quilter had to quilt in a very awkward way because it was the only way she could get it on the machine.

nana katie 03-09-2011 07:19 AM

Yes, I have met he and Mrs. Locke when the quilt was displayed at Stichen Heaven here in Quitman. His wife is a jewel. The picture of them is about a 3x4 ft. and is also made from the small squares. Looks just like them.Unless he has done something in the last year or so these are the only 2 he has made.

Ducky 03-09-2011 07:24 AM

Simply amazing....that's all I can say.

phatquilts2 03-09-2011 07:26 AM

A group of us quilters were blessed to see and admire his rendition, it is incredible. If you ever have a opportunity to see this, do not pass up the chance.

the casual quilter 03-09-2011 08:26 AM

I saw this and visited with him at a quilt show in Dallas. Linda Taylor did the quilting for him. His quilt is one of those things that takes your breath away when you see it.

Dix 03-09-2011 08:38 AM

i have seen this several times and met them. it is really amazing. if it is ever on display close to any if you, it will be worth your time to go see it.

That is truly an awe inspiring quilt! It is fantastic! I wonder if Dr Locke and Mrs Locke are planning top come to England with that beautiful quilt? :?

Jim's Gem 03-09-2011 03:06 PM

Incredible!!!

stacey65 03-09-2011 03:10 PM

AWSOME!!

Maggie_Sue 03-09-2011 03:42 PM

My understanding is that they will go wherever, they are requested to go. The requesting organization just needs to pay for their transportation and lodging. I guess they can be contacted through their web site. Would certainly encourage everyone to see it if you get a chance!! Amazing!

I saw it in Mt. Washington, Ky. last weekend at the Mt. Washington Spring Festival. Your photos are better than mine, but there's nothing like seeing it in person! What a wonderful collage. My daughter teaches textile arts in Louisville to talented high school juniors and seniors. I wish they could have seen it.

Cheesehead 05-17-2011 03:04 PM

Oh how I wish I could have seen this!

nab 05-17-2011 03:07 PM

What a talent. It's beautiful.

jslider 05-17-2011 03:21 PM

More about their schedule can be seen at www.thesupper.net. Mrs. Locke told me they have had it to Barcelona, Spain in the past, so maybe they would come to England!
