A friend of mine brought me his t-shirt early this month for me to make him a quilt. Finished the top this morning...now hoping he will like what I did.

really cute!

LoriEl 05-21-2011 09:19 AM

It's beautiful and probably more than he expected. I mean-who would think the blocks began as t-shirts? The black & yellow sashing really sets the t's off.

ScrapQuilter 05-21-2011 09:29 AM

great quilt

babyfireo4 05-21-2011 09:32 AM

You did a good job, Barb. I know he will love it.

It's wonderful! I'm inspired to begin one!

Sunny580 05-21-2011 10:34 AM

Great Job!

LeslieFrost 05-21-2011 11:05 AM

How could he not like it? It's wonderful. I agree that the sashing just sets it all off and adds the POP.

Thanks for giving me the fabric for the setting squares, that was just what I needed.

Barb_MO 05-21-2011 11:36 AM

Thanks to all for the comments...that's encouraging.
My sis, Vivian gave me a piece of black kona cotton that I needed to use for binding on another quilt....So, what did I do? I forgot that I needed the black for another project and cut it all up for the sashing to use in this one. She also gave me the bright color fabric I used for the setting squares. Nice to be able to shop in sister's stash.

Sewfine 05-21-2011 11:42 AM

Awesome.

Yes, it is. None of my sisters sew. They all come to me.

Beautiful quilt! I just recently finished my very first t-shirt quilt and have a request to do 4 more!

I'm curious - what size blocks are those. Just wondering for how easy that was or wasn't to work with.

Barb_MO 05-21-2011 12:34 PM

I have a 16 1/2 in. square ruler, so started cutting them that size and sewed the middle row together, then looking through the stack of shirted, I reliazed that several designs were about 17 inches long. Since I needed more length for the quilt, I cut the rest of the blocks 16.5 x 18.5 and that worked out to give the extra length I needed. The finished size of the quilt is approximately 75 by 100 as per request. My sashing strips were cut 1.5 in.

It wasn't all that hard to put together, except for the Pellon fused to the back of the shirts, I had a hard time feeding in through my machine even with my walking foot. The weight of it had a lot to do with it tool.

Beautiful quilt. You had some very nice t-shirts to work with. Your sashing sets it off wonderfully.

BeckyL 05-22-2011 04:36 AM

Fantastic job. Love the black sashing with the yellow cornerstones and the plaid outer border.

jeannie t 05-22-2011 04:59 AM

Great Quilt!

ICQuilts14162 05-22-2011 06:05 AM

It's fantastic! I love T-shirt quilts - they are so personal. That's what I love about so many qullts and what I think makes them all treasures for not only those here now to enjoy, but for those left when we're gone. My husband is a big Nascar fan - I especially love your checkered border

wendiq 05-22-2011 07:14 AM

I like the large motifs. Good job!

pmintpat 05-22-2011 07:28 AM

I have a bag of my son's t-shirts waiting for me to get brave enough to cut into them. What do you suggest? I have a few books with instructions. Just can't get started.

I lucked out on the checkered fabric... found it for 4.99 a yard plus 40% off. It is an older fabric called Camp Christmas J. Wecker-Frisch Licensed to SSI. It is more like a plaid than checked.

You can send them to me...I'm really brave, I'll cut into anything.

What a wonderful job. These are so popular right now and I say hooray - anything to get the younger generation to appreciate quilts and quilting.

JCquilts 05-22-2011 08:18 AM

Great job!

Barb_MO 05-22-2011 08:20 AM

Seriously this time... Measure the shirts designs(length and width of designs) so you will know the maximum inches that the blocks need to be. I like to have a least and inch or so of t-shirt left on the outside of the design. I would sketch out a block arrangement for the size of quilt you want to make. If you are able to cut you designs to be all one size then a simple layout like I did would work fine. If there aren't all the same size you can add extra that you have cut off another shirt to make them come out the same size. There are other options, you could probable find numerous photo on this site showing different designs.

I used Pellon light weight fusible non-woven interfacing #906F for the back side of the shits to keep them from stretching and make it easy to cut with a rotary cutter.

What's not to love? This is one of the best T-Shirt quilts I have seen. I really need to make one out of my son's saved baseball shirts.

AnnT 05-22-2011 08:35 AM

That's amazing! It looks great.

JCL in FL 05-22-2011 08:46 AM

Great quilt, those must be large tshirts. A good idea for anyone wanting to make one sometime is to buy the large or XL ones.

donnacollierbess 05-22-2011 10:37 AM

I'm sure he'll love this quilt! Do you have any suggestions (do and don'ts) on making a t-shirt quilt. I want to make one but I'm procrastinating because I'm really clueless.

JeanDal 05-22-2011 10:55 AM

Nice! I think he'll definitely like it!
