Here is the infamous New Year's Day Mystery quilt finally FINISHED! Oh, yes! I said it! Finished and I am so glad. Over 1200 yards of thread to quilt this, I lost track of bobbins and only 330" of binding! I have learned so much!!! But it's still a mystery quilt to me!

I also found a great web site that some of you already know about, quilter's tv. Lorraine Stangness has an episode on Magical Machine Quilting. She shows free motion quilting on your home machine and has some wonderful ideas. Try this site, scroll down to magical machine quilting.

She also has a book out that sounds like one I need to get! Anyway, here's my latest efforts to learn the art of machine quilting on my Bernina!

OH MY, MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU! That is abosolutely beautiful in both departments. I have no clue how you have the patience for that. All I can say is, WOW

Chele 03-19-2008 04:15 PM

Oh, so beautiful, Yvonne. I loved it from the start! So pretty finished. You quilted and quilted, didn't you?! It's so wonderful! I want one bad! :D

Yvonne 03-19-2008 04:24 PM

Thank you, Ladies.

Yes, Chele, I quilted and quilted and then quilted some more. I'd change from free motion to walking foot and back and then realize I'd missed a section and have to go back and change feet again!

I'd call my sister and whine. I'd send out emails to anyone that would read them and whine! My husband was even saying he'd be glad when I was through with this quilt! I gave it to him since he was so supportive!

This quilt plain scared me. I finally just told myself to consider it a practice quilt and so, that's what I did. I just practiced! Tried a little bit of everything! Sure wish I'd seen that Stangness video before I was finished with this thing! Oh, well. I pulled out that big ole pink quilt top and am going to practice on it now! I'm on a roll! I hope!

Chicken , Chicken that me ..... Hopefully mine will look half as good as yours. Thanks for posting and i sure will check out this site, maybe i'll learn something. :D

The best advice I think I've ever heard was to only worry about the part of the quilt that's right under the needle. As long as that's flat all's well! It seems to work for me.

There was a discussion on this board somewhere about machine quilting also. There were a lot of wonderful suggestions posted there also.

Steve 03-19-2008 11:32 PM

Here's the site for the mystery quilt.

I just looked and the directions are still posted apparently. Have some fun! It makes a big quilt but it was a fun project even if I couldn't keep up with the timeline on New Years Day!

Thank you everyone for all the wonderful words.

Feathers 03-21-2008 08:36 AM

Wow! Yvonne: Your quilt is gorgeous and the quilting looks outstanding. I can't wait until I'm THAT good at quilting my creations. Great job, thanks for sharing.

ShellyQ 05-04-2008 03:27 PM

Wow Yvonne, That is so cool, that must have been a mammoth task. You're really going great on the free motion quilting. I am still learning machine quilting and am still doing mostly stitch in the ditch, which is why I have so many quilt tops  . I'll have to do way more practice before I can machine quilt like that. That's gorgeous

Yvonne 05-04-2008 03:32 PM

Thanks, Shelly! There was a lot of work getting that done but here's what 'cha gotta do.
Declare that new years quilt as a practice quilt! By the time you finish you will have learned tons! Trust me! I made a couple of hot pads in practice and then I just bit the bullet and put the pedal to the metal and the rest is history. (Lots of cliches there, huh?) There is much that needs to be ignored but I did it and I'm glad. Oh, and I did not preshrink/wash the fabric so when I did wash it it really puckered up nicely and that hid another multitude of sins! I do have my ways!

QuiltinLee 05-04-2008 03:38 PM

OMG!!! You did a fabulous job!

Take a bow!!

ShellyQ 05-04-2008 03:39 PM

Lol Where there's a will there's a way. You mean to tell me that I'm actually spose to finish these tops of mine  .I thought they were meant to be this way
Seriously I really do need to practice more, might just bite the bullet, so to speak,

tlrnhi 05-04-2008 03:45 PM

That is absolutely beautiful!

Maria C 05-04-2008 04:52 PM

Love the job you have done on the quilting. I recently quilted something and put the binding on and felt it wasn't quioted quite enough for my liking so I did free motion over top of it and then felt better so I guess it is never too late. I love the heavily quilted look and yours is superb.

Harmony 05-04-2008 08:09 PM

This is a knock-out!

MissTreated 05-04-2008 08:33 PM
