A tale of two quilts

3 Attachment(s)
This summer I made a quilt for the daughter of a cousin of mine.

The cousin had made me a quilt in 1988 when I was expecting my first child. I thought at the time it was one of the most special things that anyone has done for me. (I have always loved quilts)

We lost Myrtle my cousin to cancer in 2010. Her first granddaughter is due this month and her daughter is blue that her Mom isn't able to be there.

My first thought was to make her a quilt and keep the one her Mama made. (I love quilts and the selfish part of me liked this idea. ) I decided to send her both.

The first one is the one I made, not nearly as nice work as Myrtle's but it was made with love. The second and third photos are of Myrtle's she did such lovely work and had such a lovely heart.

What a lovely gesture. I'm sure your cousin's daughter will love them both.

The quilt you made is lovely, and she will certainly appreciate it, but the quilt that her mother made is the best gift you could ever give her.

pam1966 09-04-2012 03:05 PM

I think it's wonderful that you're giving her both, but especially the one her mother made.

irishrose 09-04-2012 03:48 PM

Your quilt is darling. How generous of you to give up the one her mother made.

nivosum 09-04-2012 04:12 PM

Provide the history behind the quilts if at all possible so that it will not get lost. Perhaps attach it to the back of both quilts in some way.

Beautiful quilts, beautiful story. What's amazing is that the 24 year old quilt looks as though it is new.

Diane007 09-04-2012 04:50 PM

nice lamb...

starshine 09-04-2012 04:55 PM

What a special gesture. They are both lovely.

I tried to take good care of it, thinking to give it to my daughters for their children. They both agree with me where it should find it's home.

She will love them both. This way she can use the one you made (it's really cute, btw) and save the one her mom made as a memento, maybe even for her child. What a loving gesture.

Both are beautiful, she will so love getting the one her Mom made years ago. So kind of you to give it to her.

Cybrarian 09-04-2012 06:14 PM

Your generosity and compassion will always be symbolized for her by your quilt and her mom's is the loving hug she needs right now. What a wonderful multiple gift you are giving!!!!

debcavan 09-04-2012 06:46 PM

Yours is very beautiful and in such cheerful colors. I am sure the daughter will love that her Mother had made the other and will treasure both of them.

She will love your quilt as much as her mothers because you made it. It turned out beautiful! Sending both was a great thing to do.

You choked me up and brought a tear to my eye...both quilts will be held in her heart! They are both perfect!

QuiltnLady1 09-05-2012 06:51 AM

How wonderfully generous!! The quilt you made is beautiful and will bring a lot of joy but your gift of her mother's quilt will be a comfort and a connection not only to her mother but also to you. A very loving gift!

Lorraine Simon 09-05-2012 11:14 AM

You are one super person. Both quilt along with the story of them will be treasured for years to come ?

This is as quilts should pass to the new generation. Everyone gets to enjoy. The giving and receiving and the using and the loving. A wonderful story.

peace

I agree. I love the quilt you made & it alone would have been a fabulous gift but you went a step further & I think that is so special. What a kind, warm-hearted aunt you are!

QM 09-06-2012 01:19 AM

You did a very good thing. As important as Myrtle's quilt was to you, I am sure it will be doubly important to her daughter. Both are very lovely.

brendadawg 09-06-2012 04:05 AM

What a special thing for you to do. Bless you!

maryb119 09-06-2012 04:23 AM

I'm sure she will treasure them both! What a wonderful thing for you to do! Your cousin's daughter will think of you and her mom everytime she uses them.

Ditto. This is what it's all about. We just never know what effect our words or deeds will have on someone. She will now have a bit of her mother with her. As the quilt her Mom made for you was given in love you have returned it tenfold to give to her grandchild. You are special to do this for her and your daughters are special to let the quilt go. God bless you all. BrendaK

I think that your quilt is as lovely as your cousin. Her daughter will be very please with them both.

callen 09-06-2012 05:12 AM

What a thoughtful gesture on your part. Lovely quilts & her daughter will LOVE having them.

rj.neihart 09-06-2012 05:16 AM

What a nice thing to remember. I've recently learned that a friend I had long ago - and we lost contact due to moving - held onto a baby quilt I made for her son, who's now 32! It still looks like it was fresh off the quilting frame...! I'd forgotten about it completely - she will remember this always!

heather1949 09-06-2012 05:32 AM

What a very special thing to do, they are beautiful.

jamsbuying 09-06-2012 05:46 AM

Both quilts are lovely. What a wonderful idea to send her both!

sewmorethings 09-06-2012 05:47 AM

Your gesture to give her the one her mom made and one you made is the best gift you could give

SheriR 09-06-2012 05:57 AM

They are both precious. You are an angel. My mother passed away six months before my daughter had her first baby. My sister gave my daughter the last baby quilt my mom had made. We all cried. It tears me up now too. Your gift will be cherished. I hope you update us. :)

Shikadee 09-06-2012 06:02 AM

Adorable, both, and she will cry I bet!
Sharon

ItsJustMe 09-06-2012 06:29 AM

How kind and caring you are! I'm sure your gesture will be touching and greatly appreciated.
