Tessellation Quilt
1 Attachment(s)
I posted for help on math skills with this quilt that I am undertaking:
http://waynekollingersquiltblog.blog...to-ponder.html I have the most beautifully rich purple fabric and I wanted to use it in a quilt to highlight how stunning this fabric is. I also don't like making the same quilt twice. Finally found this one on line and said looks easy enough. Well, if you go to this thread, you'll see it wasn't as easy as I thought LOL https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...l-t296555.html In that thread, I had actually made a number of the blocks, however when I sewed them together, there was so much squaring up, I was losing "edges." I tossed them, and went back to EQ7 and printed the PP pattern. They are 4 inch blocks. I also remembered reading somewhere about people who starch their fabric (I never have, but I have starch - I used it once to "fix" a quilt that wasn't flat - didn't work as well as I wanted it to!) So I starched the fabric, cut it in strips, starched again. Paper pieced each square, starched again. Sewed the four squares together, starched again, and then did the second block. Joined those, and starched again. (am i using too much starch?) Here's a pic of my first two blocks ... I will be posting my progress throughout this thread, so feel free to drop in and see my progress! Thanks for looking and to all the brilliant math genuises, thanks for your help! Stunning. Can't wait to see your progress.
I'm wondering what brand of starch you're using...so l can call my broker & get shares of that company, lol! Wonderful how this is progressing. Don't you just love a challenge? Keeps us on our toes
I'm using Easy On LOL I bought it at the grocery store. I'm sure there is much better starch out there for quilting, but it is doing the job!
Absolutely beautiful love the drama of a 2 tone graphic. As to the starch question, nope you are not imho. When I am working w/ precise pattern matching, stripe matching, bias edges etc every time I press I use sizing, and I press after every seam is sewn. (I prefer sizing over starch, both sold at the same stores in the same place usually side by side)
Very nice. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
he, he. i just bought more starch myself! your blocks are looking wonderful!
I admire your tenacity! The blocks looks gorgeous. I starch fabric heavily before I cut it if I know there will be lots of fussy points, etc to match up. Be careful that you don’t stretch your strips if you starch them after they are cut.
Love your progress! |
This pattern is too complex for me. I don't like a challenge. Easy is for me. I make donation quilts.
Your blocks are looking great. |
Love that blue. Will be a beautiful quilt!
It's great to see your progress. Your quilt is going to be beautiful...good for you for sticking with it! Just lovely!
I've been following your journey, too... I'm glad you persevered! The fabric is so gorgeous you had to keep going, and the pattern is just stunning! It will be a work of art when you have it completed- we are so lucky to have such a great group of wonderful sharing minds here!
Your blocks are so unique and they look so challenging. So glad you stuck with it and kept on going as it is going to be a beautiful quilt. Gorgeous purple fabric. I have been following your posts and I am very interested to see more.
Love the blocks. I'm happy you found a solution!
That will be stunning when completed.
I've watched your posts. Glad you "won". It's going to be stunning!
I usually only starch once. I do it Before it is cut. Your blocks are gorgeous. The contrast is really striking.
Purple is my favorite color. Can't wait to see this finished. If I might ask what are the final measurement for your strips and triangles?
the one square is 4x4 - it is paper pieced. One of the triangles the strip size is 2 inches (including seam allowance) and for the other triangle the strip size is 1.5 inches (including seam allowance). Doing the block pattern in EQ7 and then paper piecing it has been super easy.
So I need 4 squares to make a "block" It takes about 30 minutes to make a block |
Love your blocks and the fabric. It will be a beautiful quilt when finished.
Wow, beautiful blocks! Can't wait to see your progress..........
That is looking terrific! Keep it up.
The blocks are stunning! Can not wait to see the whole quilt.
Very cool! My opinion is.....starch away!!

A couple more blocks!
I'm not sure how I am going to quilt this ... or how big I am going to go, so I'm not going to sew them all together yet. |
Your blocks are absolutely stunning! I'm not sure I'd be up to the challenge! Great job.
So far, gorgeous!
Good job!!
I'd have nightmares trying to match up all those seams. It's beautiful.
Wow, that is pretty. I use a lot of starch!

What is the difference between starch and sizing? And how does the product “flatter” fit in?
I love your quilt, the pattern and fabric are a great combo. What fabric line is it from if you don’t mind me asking? |
I do not know the difference in the two but I like the hand (feel / texture) of the sizing better then the starch.I do not know have never heard of "flatter"

I decided to do it with the three colours - dark purple, light purple and white ... so it was on hold until the light purple fabric arrived. During that time I made my mini wholecloth and a 2 fabric applique!
It arrived, and here is what I have done so far |
Wonderful work, Marion! I always enjoy following your projects :)
You are fantastic at this !!! |
Just saw his book on Amazon for $5.00!
You are making great progress. It's fun to see the colors and design come together in the quilt.
Congrats on solving your challenge..isn't that a great feeling! Your blocks are great and look like they will join together smoothly. Wouldn't you like to show your version to the original "designer", along with your comments and suggestions on construction! Btw- Go for a big quilt....it will be striking!
I've just sat here and stared and stared at this quilt trying to see its design. It is absolutely beautiful and I agree with Geri B. Big would be awesome. I finallly found the design. lol!
