They're a lot of fun.... and can be simple or intricate, depending on what you use.

:-)

motomom 05-18-2009 01:46 PM

Pam, this is super-cute.

Lacelady 05-18-2009 02:45 PM

Please may I add my name to the list of people who would like a copy of this block - it is really pretty, and makes a change from all the sunbonnets.

Lacelady 05-18-2009 03:00 PM

Than you Blue Chicken, I just found the downloads - these are adorable.

Ok... I did the boy one, what a mission! I have no idea why this one was hard, but I suspect the silk was most of the problem. Having the "sleeve cuff" right on the join also threw me, won't be doing that again! Also didn't notice till the end one of the white triangles was too short. *sigh*
In the pocket is a tiny little purple rose, with tiny little leaves. Doesn't show up well, but is the same colour as "her" waistband, so looks awesome.

Positives: Love the pants and the stripe, took a bit of playing to get the stripes straight down the leg (only had a tiny piece of fabric to work with) and the waist band is actually there because the fabric wasn't long enough! Also, the collar, cuffs, and pocket are extra bits of fabric sewn on, which looks really cool, but does add some bulk to the seams.

Negatives: (aka things I learned) Will hand sew around tiny pieces like pockets next time, even with a smaller stitch on the machine it was too difficult to be precise. And collar is not exactly straight, one is slightly bigger than the other.

k3n 05-18-2009 10:40 PM

Oh, I LOVE his stripy trousers! These are great, I must get on them sooner rather than later - and I DID finish 2 WIPs yesterday, so I'm ALLOWED! LOL

BlueChicken 05-18-2009 10:42 PM

I've just realised the stripes seem "broken"... it must be because I took the photo on my phone, they're actually solid stripes, not jagged. It was the perfect piece of fabric for pinstripe trousers, and I only had a TINY piece of it! Murphy's Law!

Have you a plan in mind? Or are you just going to make blocks and see what develops?

nellie 05-18-2009 11:30 PM

cb maybe you and pam can give us a class on how to put the block togather and show us, where to start with picese and tell us what size each picse should measure so the templates can match up right ,just a throught if you have time to help some of us,that would be fun ,then we can have a block swap ,let me know i,ll join your class and swap if you guys start one ,please

BlueChicken 05-18-2009 11:31 PM

A plan? I have a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel! LOL

I bought a neutral very light tan colour for the background, so that the boy ones can have white shirts if I want.

Apart from that, there's no plan! pmsl I'm thinking colour... lots of bright bright colour!

Swan Song 05-18-2009 11:36 PM

These are great! Thanks so much for doing them! I was going to have a run at them but had 2 things I had to knock off my WIP list. With those done I still have 2 to finish in the very near future. So 2 off add 1, pretty much the way my life goes  The blocks you girls have made so far look wonderful!

Patti - sorry! It's from a UK TV series called Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson - the Mr Bean guy?! :D

K x

Shemjo 05-19-2009 10:39 AM

The visuals are great! BC Love the striped pants!
K3n, I love that visual also! and I have not seen the TV program!

mytwopals 05-19-2009 10:44 AM

Is Blackadder the series, where Rowan's a policeman? I've seen some episodes of that one on PBS. I always loved the Mr Bean episodes, too!

BlueChicken 05-19-2009 11:58 AM

There were several era's encompassed by the Blackadder series. It's one of those programs where you either love it or hate it, and it achieved a cult status here. A lot of phrases (like the weasel one) are commonly used, although some people probably don't realise where it came from.

It was a hilarious program!

mytwopals 05-19-2009 12:12 PM

It's a different series, than the one I was thinking of. Looks hilarious, though.

pittsburgpam 05-19-2009 12:35 PM

Those are fantasic, BC. So elegant! I see that you have a seam up the crotch triangle. I am going to do another test pattern and put a seam at the crotch so that little triangle can be sewn on between them.

pittsburgpam 05-19-2009 12:37 PM

I think we can come up with a turorial. I am more comfortable with the template and piecing one so maybe BC can do the foundation piecing one?

When I make the next one I will take a pic of each step as I put it together.

nellie 05-19-2009 12:39 PM

thanks pam can,t hardy wait

I wasn't planning on it, but the piece of fabric I had for the pants was so small I had to do each leg seperately! lol It did work well, and there would have been no way to get the stripes going down each leg without splitting the pants up the middle.

I'll have to foundation piece the next one! Yikes! LOL I'll have another look at the pattern, I think it would have to be split somewhere to actually work.

Edit: I'm actually not sure that foundation piecing would be any easier, you'd still have to seperate the sleeve units from the body and skirt/pants, which still leaves an inset seam. I haven't made my own foundation patterns before though, so might not be seeing it right.

scrappylouisa 05-20-2009 08:53 AM

Thanks Pam and Blue Chicken for designing the pattern and sharing. I'm looking forward to making some of these blocks. I make my hubby's Western shirts and I save all scraps. Those fabrics would be perfect for the blocks.....both boys and girls. I also have some lightweight denim that was leftover from a jumper I made myself. My MIL just gave me oodles and oodles of sewing goodies. There are several tiny buttons that would be perfect for embellishing the blocks.

Sorry! I thought that you had foundation pieced yours. I don't want to decide for you what you would like to do a tutorial on.

I knew I could count on my quilting buddies to make me laugh today. Just came home from hospital - final fluff and tuck after mastectomy. All went well, but I've felt better! Now I'm getting better through laughter! Thanks gals!

Your welcome Joanne - wow I didn't know about your op - glad things are finally done with. Hope you feel better soon. Sending you hugssss!
