Every now and then you get something really special in the swaps on this board, this is definitely one of them. Mawluv sent this pincushion to me on the pincushion swap.

Look at the trim even it is hand sewn. I've never seen " chicken scratch" before. Something tells me this is a Prime example of this technique.

Thank you so much Mawluv! It's beautiful, I'm not so sure I will fill it with pins.

What a cute pin cushion! I love the details, and I want one too! Mawluv if you are reading this, let me know if I can pay you to make one for me.

What a treasure. Beautiful keepsake.

Now I feel old. I did an apron for a present and yes, it took forever. Okay, that was fifty-some years ago. Perhaps it is making a comeback? It was fun, pretty but time-consuming. Glad to see your pin cushion. It does bring back memories. Thanks.

Very pretty. I was going to make chicken scratch pillows but, never did. This was in a Family circle or Woman's Day Magazine in the 70s, 80s at the latest. I finally donated the gingham fabrics.

QuiltnNan 10-04-2012 07:29 AM

I guess I am dating myself too: I remember my Mom & Grandma making hen scratch aprons, trim on curtains, detail on toaster covers, etc.

What is "old" is "new again....... :)

I love chicken scratch....it is really very easy but does take some time. I used to do quite a bit of it about 25 years ago. My daughter (a teenager at that time) also did it. We made some really cute stuff. Still have some books with patterns in somewhere. Should dig them out and try it again.
The pin cushion is very cute. One of a kind!! Almost too pretty to stick pins in!!

JJean 10-04-2012 09:47 AM

Lovely Chicken Scratch for a special pin cushion. My Mom did Chicken Scratch on the front of a sun dress for me that I wore home from the hospital for my first son - 1966!! She also added smocking with it ---remember that?? :-)

Peggy Jeanne 10-04-2012 02:33 PM

And this is one I am working on with a dark purple sashing. I love chicken scratch but it is real time consuming.

Learned to do "Chicken Stratch" years ago when I was a child. My grandmother taught it to me (I was about 55 ), so it is not by any means a new stitch, a really OLD one ! ! !

JabezRose 10-06-2012 04:13 AM

Just learned what chicken scratch was about year ago. Been planning on trying some but have not gotton around to it. Love the work, beautiful pillow. Maybe that will encourage me to get around to trying it.

quilter56 10-06-2012 04:16 AM

What a great idea. My grandmother use to do this on aprons!

janegb 10-06-2012 05:19 AM

It really is pretty!

cactusmomma 10-06-2012 05:53 AM

That is so nice. I can't believe chicken scratch is coming back after all these years.

jansquiltn 10-06-2012 06:00 AM

I don't think that I could put pins in it either.

Very nice, I had always heard it was called chicken tracks. They have so many names for so many things now.

SheriR 10-06-2012 06:21 AM
