The Things We Do For Our Kids

3 Attachment(s)
My daughter recently returned home from her first year at university. One of her classmates is getting married next weekend (an older classmate, not a fellow 18 year old!) and at the end of April she asked me if I possibly had "...any spare quilts that she could give the couple for a wedding gift?". I don't generally have full-size quilts on hand (although I do keep a couple of baby ones in reserve at all times) so I decided to make this string quilt from my scrap bins. I've never made one before and was it ever fun to do - the blocks go together quickly and the top requires very little quilting. I only do SITD but I was pleasantly surprised with the star pattern that occurred by accident on the back. Thanks for looking.

Ohhhh.....I love this. Great job. Thank you for sharing.

lollygagging 05-20-2012 05:24 PM

What a great Mom you are. I love scrappies and this one is great. I love the way you made the colors pop using the black. Thanks for sharing.

jhoward 05-20-2012 05:26 PM

Colors are beautiful. Your quilting is very good. Lucky is the couple receiving this as a gift.

Dolphyngyrl 05-20-2012 06:01 PM

Not a scrappy lover at all, but yours is really pretty, I really like the colors

fxsts93kf 05-20-2012 06:27 PM

Really striking with the black. I like that the borders on the ends are larger than the sides. Gorgeous!

BrendaK 05-20-2012 06:35 PM

very pretty. I am sure that they will love it. Good going Mom. BrendaK

Beautiful! And it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to use up all those little strips. What a good mom you are!

ScrapQuilter 05-20-2012 07:24 PM

You are so right.........the things we don't do for our kids............. you are such a great mom and I am sure they love the quilt.

Gladys 05-20-2012 07:29 PM

I think they will love it, at least I hope so.

Liz92B 05-20-2012 07:42 PM

I'd like to know, please, what font/alpha (and size!) you used to ME the label (I have a Bernina 340 deco, made my first quilt label by ME - a year ago already!)
luv, Liz / Calgary

Your such a sweet mom to do that and what a wonderful quilt you made to, it's so pretty!!!

Grandma Peg 05-20-2012 07:57 PM

Very nice quilt and gift for your daughter's friend. You are right "what we do for our kids". But it also makes you feel good when they ask for a quilt because you know how much they like what you do. A little more time would have been nice. lol

sammygirlqt 05-20-2012 08:02 PM

Lovely job and the couple will surely be thrilled with it. I know what you mean about mom's stash of quilts. I too have given quilts as gifts to people I have never met!

Neesie 05-20-2012 08:31 PM

Beautiful! You should remind your daughter often, how lucky she is!

bearisgray 05-20-2012 08:44 PM

I like the quilt - and yes, we sometimes do jump through hoops (or make quilts) because our kids asked us to!

The black diagonals and sashing really makes this quilt outstanding.

SheriR 05-20-2012 09:12 PM

I love this! Makes me want to make one.

quiltsRfun 05-20-2012 10:21 PM

Yes, we do lots for our kids. And it sounds like you had fun time doing this good deed. I'm still saving strings and hope to do a quilt like this soon. Hope mine turns out as nice as yours did. The happy couple is sure to love it.

P.S. You're a great mom!

May in Jersey 05-20-2012 10:26 PM

Great looking quilt, they are going to love it. I love making string quilts and think that using the same color in the center of each block and for the sashing like you did really makes the scrappy strips sparkle. Great work, May in Jersey

sewmorethings 05-21-2012 03:54 AM

Beautiful, love the black sashing

Tink's Mom 05-21-2012 04:38 AM

BizzieLizzie 05-28-2012 06:17 AM

sewnbug 05-28-2012 06:26 AM

What a great mm. I love the stained glass effect.

pamesue 05-28-2012 06:42 AM

Peggy Jeanne 05-29-2012 04:47 PM

Very pretty. Good job!

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 05-29-2012 05:48 PM

The color selection was ingenious even from scraps as it'll go with a lot of different decors. Very nice that you stepped up and took care of your "motherly" duties. tee/hee. I know what you mean about kids. Have a good day.

EvelynJ 05-29-2012 06:26 PM

Wow, you are amazing. That is so perfect for a wedding gift. So bright and cheerful! Great job!

earthwalker 05-29-2012 06:29 PM

Stunning quilt that would suit any style....total winner of a wedding present. You are a gem for doing this for your daughter. She must be so very proud of your work to put in a request:)

Jan T 05-29-2012 08:37 PM

WOW! You really are a great mum. The colors and design came together beautifully. I hope the marriage is as harmonious as this quilt.

Me, too! This one just glows -- looks like stained glass with the black "leading". I love it! And I'm sure your DD's friends will, too!

TeresaS 05-29-2012 09:53 PM

Love it! You are a good mom!

helou 05-30-2012 02:07 AM

Really nice. I am mentally preparing myself in doing one. Your is beautiful and a good inspiration for me.
I have the same question that Liz has. I have not done a quilt label yet and my very first handquilting quilt is almost finished... now I have to figure out how to do the label

You are such a courageous mom. I have a hard time finishing things ON TIME! I'm still working on a graduation quilt which is way past due. The string quilt is great! Love the black!

Jammin' Jane 05-31-2012 11:27 AM

Looks fantastic! They will love it forever! :)

CarrieC 05-31-2012 11:29 AM
