I love your necktie fan quilt and would like to make one too! Was this your original pattern or did you have directions to go by? I need more detail. Thanks for the help!

cathyvv 08-16-2014 04:21 PM

Just wow is all I can say, its beautiful.

husker67 08-17-2014 02:30 PM

Wow,that's gorgeous. Did you already have the ties or did you have to scrounge at shops? I would like to make one and have checked Goodwill, etc. They're a little expensive for used!!!

Maggie_Sue 08-17-2014 06:28 PM

One of my all time favorite tie quilts!!

jeanne49 08-17-2014 06:48 PM

Very nice! I just might have to start looking for ties at the 2nd hand store and yard sales. No one in my family wears ties on a regular basis, so any ties they have a minimal and they wear the same 1 or 2 ties when necessary. I know there is a lot of work in getting them ready to cut and piece but the effort is well worth it.

Sorry for this post. I am new to the forum and I see now that the information was given many times. Thank you!

I love your quilt! I have some vintage ties to play with that my mother-in-law collected. I wanted to make this quilt for my brother-in-law and his wife who took such good care of mother in her final years.
I bought the Fons and Porter book and will use their instructions as a guide. I cut out some paper templates from the templates in the book and laid these out, just to see how the block would come together. When I laid out the fan pieces, they were fine on the 12 1/2" white material block as per instructions. But, when I used the template in the book for the corner piece, it was so small that it did not even touch the fan. I had to increase the curved side of the template by 1". I am glad that I used paper first before cutting the fabric.
Has anyone else had this issue or am I looking at this wrong?
Thanks!

Hi All,

Here is a pic of the necktie quilt top [without any borders yet] that I started around Christmas time.
Some of the vintage necktie pieces were pretty stretchy and tended to ravel, so I sewed lining material to each piece, and turned and ironed them before appliqueing the pieces to the blocks. This took some extra time, but I hope it will help with strength and use over time.

Thank you so much for posting your tie quilt. My dsl rough me 3 bags of his ties. I have looked every where for this pattern and found several, but not this layout. Please tell me the size of your blocks.

kzimmer 02-03-2015 02:58 PM

My blocks were cut 12 1/2" square, before seaming. The quilt is for a Queen size bed.

sewfriendly 02-03-2015 02:59 PM

I love this idea. Thanks for the picture.

If you go to Amazon.com there are some Quick Quilts from the Heart books by Fons & Porter, if you should
need one.

Your quilt is awesome! I have been trying to gather ties to do this same quilt but I only have about 40 ties, so it is going to be a while before I can find enough of them to make the project.

Check your local thrift shops for neckties. I have been collecting them to make bags and have found some very nice ones for $0.50 each.

himnherr 04-15-2015 03:13 AM

Wow! Beautiful. The white really does make the colorful ties pop!

mountain deb 06-15-2015 04:52 PM

I'm looking for a quilt to use up the ties I accumulated and I have more than enough to do this one. Thanks for the inspiration.
