I have fallen in love with your quilt. My sister asked me to make her a quilt of her husbands ties. He just passed away and I think your quilt shows the ties off beautifully. What size blade did you use, if you don't mind sharing that, I would love to know. I have tried an 8 1/2 but I only come up with a 10 block.

lynnie 02-02-2014 10:54 AM

Beautiful---I've been buying dh very nice ties with the same idea you did
I only allow ties in the house that I can "recycle"
You did a fantastic job.

Your quilt is amazing! You did such a good job on it. I also wish I had saved my DH old ties.

misoop 02-02-2014 04:03 PM

I love your tie quilt and the border is just icing on the cake!! I have collected a box full of ties. I have just put off getting to them because I didn't know a really pretty pattern for the ties......this is IT!! I found them at yard sales and at a place in Texas where you could buy things by the pound. I racked up on that one. Anyway....stunning quilt, my favorite is always scrappy quilts!! Beautiful!

josie bass 02-02-2014 06:22 PM

bossifamily 02-04-2014 06:44 PM

Did you follow info from a book/ pattern - or just made it up.
My father in law died last year and I have 60-70 ties and wanted to do something
like this for memory quilt. Perfect pattern to be able to divide by color, patterns,
etc.

Any help is appreciated...

susiequilt 02-04-2014 07:18 PM

Lovetoquilt gave this info on post #22

"The pattern is from a book by Fons and Porter. "Quick Quilts from the Heart." The pattern itself is called fancy fans. The border on theirs had a scalloped border but I did the braided border so I could use more of the fabric from the ties. Yes I used parts of all the ties. I needed 96 different ties to have a tie on each blade of the fan. I only had 171 ties so I had to used 25 of the ties twice."

She gave the wrong info on number of ties and corrected that in post #40 something.

I found a copy of the quick quilts from the heart at the library. You might try there.

Thank you for posting this. I have my husband's ties and have been wondering how to use them. Such a good idea.

crafterbarbara 04-25-2014 07:50 AM

Yesterday I was given a bag of ties. What an inspiration your quilt gives me. But a lot more ties to collect. It is beautiful.

Love it !! You did a nice job!

josie bass 07-07-2014 08:45 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, I see that you made the border with the small end of the tie's and the fans with the large end of the tie's. That is so clever and where did you get enough tie's . I love the colors and putting it with white it make it pop.

Delbra 07-09-2014 10:53 PM

What a manly quilt.

love to sew 07-13-2014 02:52 PM

What did you use for the 1/4 circles? silk from the ties? or quilting cotton? I've been saving ties for a quilt and this is the best pattern I have seen for them. Thank you for sharing and I noticed that yours is an old posting. I hope you are still on the board.

Linda J58 07-14-2014 03:24 PM

I love this pattern. I have been pondering on making a tie quilt. Would you please share the pattern or even sell the pattern.

ro 07-14-2014 03:40 PM

I have read through ALL of the comments & want to thank you for all of your help. You are very generous to share your knowledge & talent. Beautiful quilt! I am going to give this a go once I get my things together. I need to decide what to use for the backing... whether muslin or cotton. I am 3/4 through my Cathedral Window. This tie quilt will be my next one
