2 years ago, a very dear friend was diagnosed with brain cancer. Hearing this, I decided to make a quilt for her, hoping the love, joy, and energy included with each stich would help comfort her and aid in her healing. Sadly, my friend died shortly after her diagnosis and before I finished her quilt. It knocked the wind out of my sails, I cried for days, and packed the quilt away. I brought it out today and decided it needed finishing. I'm thinking her family will want it, I'll ask when it's done. I have a long way to go with it, the star in the picture is the only one complete, I finished it just to take the picture. The floral is a wide striped fabric, I cut triangles, four joined to make the square. The star is paper pieced. I'll keep you posted with my progress. Helen would love to know it's being shared even before it's completion.

This quilt will be a lovely tribute to Helen. At first, I thought the first square was a single piece - you've done a lovely job with it and the star too!! I think it's going to be wonderful. :D

How special. I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}
Here's just an idea--maybe, just maybe..a passing thought... what if you made a wall hanging from the quilt idea and gave it to her family to hang and see up every day. You sure do beautiful work. |
That sure is something you have there.. I would love some of that fabric..What you are doing is going to mean so much to her family! I look forward to seeing future pictures.
|
Can't wait to see the completed quilt - will be gorgeous. You are a kind, wonderful person.
|
Very, very pretty. Is it going to be a sampler with each block different or a repeat of the blocks shown. I love those fabrics. Very soothing.
|
The blocks are beautiful, and what a lovely tribute to Helen.
|
That is really beautiful! It reminds me of a church stained glass the way you pieced and framed the striped fabric.
Can't wait to see it finished. |
That is so nice... You are a very special person to do this... It is such a pretty quilt and I will enjoy watching it as it progresses..

Your story touched me dearly. You are a courageous woman for going back to the quilt to finish it. I know times like this, it hurts to go back and pick up where you left off. I'm sure her family would be honored. The quilt is going to be gorgeous!
|
I'm sorry to hear you lost your friend. My uncle has had reoccuring brain tumors and I understand somewhat how hard that can be. You are an amazing person and her family will be so touched! It is beautiful and I am looking forward to seeing it all finished.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I've been sewing away on the quilt, with still a lot to go. As I've been sewing, I've been thinking of Helen and her family. I know they are going to be very pleased. I've also been thinking of what words I will put on the quilt label. I have a lot of time to think about it, but there will be something about in honor of Helen. Don't know what else yet.

I've been working on it most of the weekend and have the center pieced. Now for the border. I put some of the stripe (a smaller stripe than the flowers I used on the squares) and decided it didn't like it. So now it's coming off, going to put a 2" strip of the background in, then the stripe, then another 2" strip and then more 1/2 stars for the final border. It's looking great, but giving me fits.

Don't forget pictures!

I just spent about an hour and a half un-sewing. Putting it up for the night and going on to something EASY!

It always takes so much longer to reverse sew then it did when sewing the pieces together. I just spent a couple hours yesterday doing the same thing with a project I'm working on. I feel your pain.

Wow...what a quilt! It's indescribably beautiful. I can't wait to see the finished project. Beautiful.
I'm so sorry about your friend. I lost one of my best friends to cancer a few years ago and another friend this past Sunday night. If only they could find a cure for cancer! Hugs ! |
That is beautiful, both the quilt & the intention.

I'm so glad this post came back up! I've been wondering how the quilt has been coming along! :)
|
Had to put it on the back burner for a little while. I messed up the border, and needed to take a break. In the meantime, I started a scrap exchange, and with that is a deadline. But I will soon get back to it, and finish it. I'm very excited about how it looks, I'll take a picture soon of the progress and post it.
Thanks for all the kind words all! M |

Hey! I resemble that star.
I have also lost a friend to brain cancer, it was... a very bad year. I hope the last year has been one that has given you the time to reflect upon the life you lost, the value of your friendship with that person, and the joy you should have in every day you have to live on this earth. It would be nice to see an update when you get a chance. tim in san jose |
