Towel aprons

2 Attachment(s)
When I was helping a friend sort through his late grandmother's things, we ran across an apron made in the 30s. The fraying end of a towel was cut off and the rest was used for the apron The quilted bib was from a print fabric. What a clever woman!! He gave me the apron and I copied it to make my own. So simple to make and I love having the towel so handy when I'm baking.
Thanks for looking.

That is a nice apron -- really like your rendition of it. Never thought to use a towel for the bottom, that is a great idea.

I love this what a great idea and the blue one is such a treasure. Thanks for showing it to us.

Smartly done.

carolaug 11-25-2013 05:51 PM

What a great idea! One towel could make two aprons.

Jackie Spencer 11-25-2013 08:40 PM

How clever! I really like that!

earthwalker 11-25-2013 08:44 PM

Clever idea....I may incorporate the towel idea into an apron for my husband....he's a keen cook..though a tad on the messy side.

SandyinZ4 11-25-2013 08:44 PM

What a nice idea. Are aprons coming back into popularity again? I used pretty hand towels to make "bib's for my mom when she was in a nursing home. Worked great.

SewExtremeSeams 11-25-2013 08:53 PM

Great idea!

charlotte37830 11-25-2013 09:10 PM

What a neat idea. I really like both aprons. I'll have to try that. I'm always laying my kitchen towel down and then not be able to find it. Do you mind telling what size you cut the "bib" part of the apron?

What a good idea. I'm always looking for new apron ideas and this one is a winner.

Love this idea! A great idea for hostess gifts or whatever.

I made one of these for a friend who was pregnant. I heard that you use this to wrap the baby in after giving them a bath. That way you don't go searching for the towel with a wet, cold baby. You can't loose it if it's tied around your neck. It would be good in the kitchen too. I remember grandma using the end of the apron as a potholder. Never could understand how one layer of cotton kept her from getting burnt.

Homespun 11-26-2013 06:33 AM

Like that!!! Gives me ideas too.

quiltingeileen 11-26-2013 06:41 AM

I'll make a few of these for sure!

NIICHMOM 11-26-2013 06:47 AM

Love the Idea of the towel, for the size just adjust according to size of towel and shorten or lengthen Thanks for sharing.

It'd be even better if pockets were added too. Thanks for sharing this. Happy Thanksgiving!

postal packin' mama 11-26-2013 12:09 PM

For pockets: Using one "retired" towel, after the skirt portion has been cut from the towel, you could use the remainder for the bib and pockets, either on that apron or swap with another apron being made from another 'retired' towel. Love your aprons. Yrs ago I made some half aprons from printed cottons and sewed a small hand towel into the waistband on one side of the front. Great for wiping your hands while cooking. Thanks for sharing with us.

KLO 11-26-2013 12:49 PM

This is exactly what I need! I am always wiping my hands on my pants while looking for a towel. This is definitely on my to do list now. Thanks so much for posting these.

I used the measurements from the 30s apron 11" wide x 9"long for the bib. However, you can make it whatever size you'd like. I would recommend using a cheap towel(I got mine at Walmart on sale for 2 for $5 and I was able to get two aprons out of each towel (Christmas gifts). They are thinner and gather easier than the expensive ones.

That is a great idea. Some of the best ideas are the simplest ones. Love your aprons.

The 30s apron did have a pocket made out of the same fabric that was used for bib and straps. I just didn't bother putting pockets on mine.

What a great idea!

QltrSue 11-26-2013 03:53 PM

Darling and practical idea. What about using a washcloth for a pocket?

maga 11-26-2013 04:44 PM

Love it! Please, please share the pattern. I always wear an apron and my last one I have is almost see thru!!

Cindy60545 11-27-2013 04:06 AM

I'd forgotten about this type of apron, will have to make one for me!

twinkie 11-27-2013 04:22 AM

So love this idea. Thanks for sharing.....great idea for Grands and Christmas presents for next year.

Retired Fire Chief 11-27-2013 06:12 AM

What a clever idea, you always need something to wipe your hands on in the kitchen, why not the apron! Thanks for the wonderful idea!

tessagin 11-27-2013 06:18 AM

When I got married the first time, my grandmother made me an apron just like this and apologized saying that was all she had as a gift. It was the best gift and I used it for many years. Every shower after that and for as long as she could my Grandmother gave those as shower gifts. It got to be a staple on any shopping list to pick up a towel for Grandma to make. I still have the apron. Mine is brown with yellow trimmings. Ok tissues!!!!!

Jean in Ohio13452 11-27-2013 06:47 AM

You could use a hand towel to make matching aprons for the little Girls in the family - would make neat Christmas gifts... or even those Bar Mop Style cloths would work for the little girls too... they are usually Square so you wouldn't have to cut them...
