Oh gosh...that is lovely! You keep inspiring me to move a hand quilted whole cloth closer to the top of my To-Do list...

cuppi duke 09-28-2010 06:21 AM

that is absolutely wonderful, makes my hand quilting look awful. How long did it take you to do it?

Jory 09-28-2010 06:34 AM

I'd like to try something like your quilt.
What kind of fabric did you use? Is it muslin? It seems to me that muslin comes in different weights, or qualities. Do you know what I mean? What is your recommendation re the cloth?

And did you use quilting thread? How many stitches to an inch? What kind of batting (cotton? cotton-poly blend? low loft? etc.)

Thanks for your time answering all of my questions! You can reply off list if you want: [email protected]

The quilt is a museum piece: you must be incredibly proud!!

So, so pretty!

Borntohandquilt 09-28-2010 09:45 AM

I'm pleased to answer your questions!

I use a patchwork solid fabric with a high thread count - the best one for me is a fabric with 75 -80 threads per square inch in each direction. Unfortunately the thread count is not written on the fabric bolds but after 20 years of handquilting I can see the right quality from a distance of a few meters... I love to use the P&B Solids or the Moda Bella Solids. They are available in many different colors. I've also used muslin with a similar thread count and it works great.

I normally use hand quilting thread and I prefer the YLI brand. I've also used Gütermann and King Tut and Treasure of Superior Threads. I can do 12-14 stitches to an inch (only counted on the top), sometimes one or two more - it depends a lot of the fabric and the batting.

My prefered battings are Hobbs or Legacy 80/20, Quilters Dream cotton, Legacy or Tuscany cotton, all low loft. I want to have the look of an antique quilt and theses battings are good for that!

If you have some further questions - just ask!

:) :)

Love the quilting (sooo jealous) !!! The shells are beautiful.

kaygee 09-28-2010 06:09 PM

This is so beautiful. I too love hand quilting but never thought to do a quilt like this. You must tell me, when you make the queen size, will you use a loom and did you use a loom on this wallhanging? And what size batting did you use? Now I'm so excited to start a quilt like this, I've always made block quilts and the are so hard to hand quilt.
