Treasured gift from BIL

1 Attachment(s)
Today my BIL gave me a treasured gift. He is 84,widowed,no children. He wanted me to have a quilt his mother made. She was born in 1888 and passed in 1968. It is in perfect condition. Maybe a little yellow -but what does that matter - I can assure you that at my picture is very inferior. The colors are beautiful. He knew I would care for it. He actually gave me two. One needs repairs where piecing threads have broken. I promised I would fix it and return to him. We have several family members that would love the quilts!! He had several --two sun bonnet Sues made by his mother and one other rag quilt as he called it. All are almost perfect. I would have loved them but he gave me the one he liked best. I did tell him I would add a small label with his mothers name and dates so she would not be forgotten by nieces and nephews. He was happy for that!!! I just had to share!!:o

What a lovely quilt and how nice of him to give it to you. Glad you're going to label it for future generations.

Teddybear Lady 10-24-2012 07:48 PM

What a blessing. He knows you will take care of it and respect it. Putting a label on it is a good idea.

What a really nice quilt. The fabrics are probably a walk down memory lane. You could probably find someone to date it by them if it isn't dated.

Haven't thought about that!! I'll take it to guild meeting. Sure wish I could figure out how to load a better picture so you could see the reds and blues!!

Those old birds did some excellent work! You are very fortunate to have this treasure.

Jingle 10-25-2012 06:34 AM

Absolutely beautiful. You are so lucky to get this wonderful quilt. It is always best to give treasured things away before your time comes to leave. Good for him, he is able to give them to whomever he wants to have them. I hope the others treasure them also.

I don't know the name, but it is all hand pieced and quilted, and clearly a scrap quilt. some of the printed fabric are partial dresden plates, some squares, some strips, then all cut and place in the block with the 1/4 circles that make the full circle. The quilting is as magnificient as the piecing!

It is such a memorial to his mother and grandmother that he has passed along these wonderful keepsakes to someone that will appreciate them. This one is just wonderful a very talented quilter made this it is evident by this photo.
