Tried my hand at reverse applique!

While I was up visiting my Great-Aunt Ruth in Nova Scotia, she answered a million and one quilting questions. There were techniques I'd been interested in trying (machine applique and paper-piecing) that I had a hard time jumping into without a little hands-on instruction. After I successfully completed my first little applique project, she decided I should try my hand at reverse applique!

The tulip pattern was one that she'd made several years ago and thought would be a relatively simple, if slightly fiddly, first project. I completed the whole thing in several hours, even with three separate incidents of binding boo-boo's that had to be unpicked (she also showed me how to neatly and "invisibly" bind).

Not perfect, especially since this was only my second time ever doing any sort of applique, but I think that it turned out pretty! It will be a gift for my Aunt Judy, to hang in her window while she recovers from surgery.

It was deceptively simple with the right tools! Just a lot of tracing and cutting - the cutting was definitely the most fiddly and time-consuming bit. :) And thank you!

Are the edges of the dark fabric turned under? Did you do your stitches by hand or machine? It looks perfect to me!!!

I did the stitching by machine. The edges aren't turned under, but I was going slowly while stitching and catching juuuust at the lip, so the stitches sank down into the fusible fleece interfacing I used as batting and pulled the raw edge along with it.

I'm not sure if she's ever had to teach another quilter before. She did an awesome job, though, and her guidance was the 'push' I needed to get out of my comfort zone of straight piecing.

I love reverse applique. I did one 25 years ago and framed it. I really like the process and the finished result. Our teacher was a wonderful woman who had most of the nuckles in her hands replaced. I couldn't believe her talent. She was doing life-size knight in armor for a local hotel in the Chicago area. She also had a beautiful piece over her back door window. It really does give the same impression as stain glass. You did a fantastic job. Lucky you to have your aunt to teach you. Must have been a fun visit. Yolanda Wood River
