There is nothing good to say about this top! Don't bother saying anything good. I just want to know what to do with it? It's too ugly for a gift, and it's too small for charity (& too ugly for that too...LOL), it is the only quilt I machine applique'd and it was done in a machine applique' class. Took me two days to make this ugliness! Is there anything I can do to save it or should I just take it apart and use the squares in something different like pillows for kids or something like that?

I honestly dont thin that is ugly! Just press it and turn it into a wall hanging? Or make it the center of a bigger quilt with some of the same shade of fabric. I really don't think its ugly at all. My boys would love that in a quilt are you kidding? Seriously!!

Leota 11-26-2010 06:51 AM

Right now it's not pretty but it's not finished either...
what are the dimensions?
save it and join the IRR next August... you'll be amazed at what other people can do with an "ugly" center.

nativetexan 11-26-2010 06:53 AM

well, adding borders around it would help take the eye away and make it larger. it will look fine and you'll find a use for it yet! even if you end up giving it to charity.
i just made a very small one out of fleece squares. left overs from larger fleece cover ups with ties on the sides. i may give it to charity.

Raggiemom 11-26-2010 06:53 AM

I actually don't think it's ugly, it would make a great wall hanging or expand it into a boy's quilt. Remember, what we personally think is ugly someone else will often love!

renee765 11-26-2010 06:53 AM

First of all, I don't think it's that ugly. However, it sounds like it's not your taste, so I suggest finishing it off as a wall hanging, and use it on the back door to announce to critters that you are a critter-friendly home.

magpie 11-26-2010 06:57 AM

Like the others, I say finish it to size for a charity quilt using borders. Some little boy is going to love this quilt.

leonajo 11-26-2010 06:58 AM

I don't think its that bad. I think I would add another block section on the side and then but several borders on it. The fabrics are great when u look at them indivually. keep with the animal theme. U could always use it to keep in ur car? Or it would make a great lap quilt for a man or outdoors type woman....think " green " and be proud of it. Looks like ur applique turned out really well. Great gecko! So the class was a sucess!!!

stewyscrewy 11-26-2010 06:59 AM

wall hanging for a kid for sure. just add a few boders to make it a wee bit larger.

Tracy50 11-26-2010 07:04 AM

Thanks for the help! I should have known I could count on you guys to come up with something positive. I love all the ideas! I was gonna toss it! Thanks to All!!

if you're pleased with the results of the applique work, i'm sure you'd be happier if you took it apart and used those patches/blocks in a new project.

if nothing about it pleases you, sandwich it using batting scraps and the ugliest fabric in your stash. it will make a very good practice piece for quilting. :-)

cjomomma 11-26-2010 07:14 AM

Oh Tracy it's not that bad. Little man would love!! Put a couple of borders on it and finish it.

bearisgray 11-26-2010 07:17 AM

I think it has positive potential - but I also think it would look nicer if it was taken apart and assembled differently.

It appears that you've already spent a lot of time doing the appliqued squares - like them a lot - so it would be a good thing if you could figure a way to make them work better.

kathy 11-26-2010 07:21 AM

do you have a dog? they absolutely quilts and can find beauty in all of them!

KathyAire 11-26-2010 07:28 AM

I agree that once it is pressed, a border on it and finished you will like it better. I could see a young boy thinking it is the neatest thing ever.

Anything I ever made that I didn't like, my dogs got it and they love it. By the way, they have several things that didn't start out for them.........

ccb2200 11-26-2010 07:48 AM

That is cute. Just iron it and maybe put a border around it and make it into a Wall Hanging. It will really be nice after you do that.

Annaquilts 11-26-2010 07:51 AM

My 11 year old son likes it.

donnalynett 11-26-2010 08:05 AM

I think it would be darling if you just keep adding "scrappy" pieces and trim with a border.Make it come out to 42x48 and then practice machine quilting with it and donate it to a charity. People who need warmth and care will think it is beautiful and will treasure it. I really don't think there is such a thing as an "ugly quilt"!

morelcabin 11-26-2010 08:08 AM

I think it would make a great pillow sham on a little boys bed! My boys would have LOVED something like that when they were younger

leiladylei54 11-26-2010 08:50 AM

I think boys would love it. Finish it and you might be surprised how it changes how it looks when it's completed.

Mariposa 11-26-2010 08:55 AM

Maybe add a couple of borders, then if you still don't care for it then donate it. Lots of worthy causes out there, and a little boy would love your "critters". :)

I agree. More scrappy blocks and animal fabric on the back if possible. It will turn out just fine.

Ditter43 11-26-2010 09:18 AM

It looks like a good start to something! I can see a lot of possibilities! I think it could be turned into a cool wallhanging! :D

lalaland 11-26-2010 09:25 AM

You may not like it, but trust me, someone else is going to think it's better than chocolate! It looks good to me, I think the colors blend well, it's just unfinished, that's all. I think some nice batik borders would be just the ticket!

Gina_D 11-26-2010 10:04 AM

I like it - nice job on the machine applique! Most of my quilts are 'practice' quilts to learn something new with. They are given as gifts, imperfections and all.

franie 11-26-2010 10:06 AM

I see a wall hanging or small lap quilt. Just needs a little more added to it to really make it pop. Think about it for a while.

quiltgrammyt2 11-26-2010 10:18 AM

Just press square up and add borders should be fine.

sawsan 11-26-2010 10:27 AM

It,s nice for a class chart shows birds, amphibians, reptiles and mamals .Keep it as the memory during the class. Make a fram 4 your room.

MomtoBostonTerriers 11-26-2010 10:30 AM

Okay, I'm in the minority. This is an ugly quilt top. I've bought into Bonnie's philosophy (www.quiltville.com) -- no fabric is too ugly that it can't be cut into small pieces and used in a quilt. So, if I had this quilt top, I'd cut those appliques into small squares or strips, and use 'em in a patchwork quilt.

I go To The Sea To Breathe 11-26-2010 10:33 AM

My 13 yr old grandson would love that top.

I'm with Kathy. If you don't my dogs would love it.

raedar63 11-26-2010 10:42 AM

This is right up my alley as they say, I love the unusual!

quiltsRfun 11-26-2010 10:59 AM

I don't think it's ugly. But if you have a dog or a cat they're very non-judgmental.

carhop 11-26-2010 12:55 PM

that is a great start on a quilt for a boy

quilter68 11-26-2010 03:08 PM

It is funny! It is lonely and needs some borders.

TN Donna 11-26-2010 03:50 PM

I like your "ugly" quilt. I would add borders and make a lap quilt for one of yor grandsons or nephews.

pal 11-26-2010 03:57 PM

Look on the bright side - you learned how to machine applique!

Then look on the other side - o.k. in this case just look at the bright side.......

As everyone else said, keep building and it'll turn out fine.

Confederate Rose 11-26-2010 04:24 PM

You don't know ugly! I made one so ugly, I gave it to my daughter's cat. When he died, she wrapped him in it because he liked it so much. I think this would be really cute for a little boy. Be sure to show it to us when you complete it.

Luv Quilts and Cats 11-26-2010 04:25 PM

I don't think it is ugly either! I would just make a sandwich, quilt it and put a binding on it. It would make a great little wall hanging. And it is not ugly, really.

watson's mom 11-26-2010 05:10 PM

I don't think it is ugly at all. Just put a few borders on it to make it bigger and give it to a favorite little boy and let him start making memories with it. Some little guy will think it is the best thing in the world. Thanks for sharing.
