Trying glue basting for the first time.

1 Attachment(s)
I made this little scrappy quilt top for my granddaughter awhile back.
Today hubby helped me glue baste it. This is my first time trying it and so far so good.
We just drizzled the glue straight from the bottle and spread out any big blobs with our finger.
I am going to let it dry overnight and quilt it tomorrow.

Nice quilt.I think granddaughter will love it.

Flowergurl 03-06-2016 04:18 PM

Thanks, she will be 3 next month. I showed her the top the other day and she pointed out a bunny rabbit. :)

Tartan 03-06-2016 04:22 PM

Looking good!

Fizzle 03-06-2016 05:18 PM

Love all the color! I just glued my first one also. Just a small throw. 36". See some "glue lines" in it. Read here to also iron it. We'll see how it goes. Good luck with yours!

Maggie_Sue 03-06-2016 05:18 PM

Great quilt! Have not yet tried the glue basting, let me know how it goes!

Flowergurl 03-06-2016 05:26 PM

Thanks, yes i ironed it and have a fan blowing on it.

Onebyone 03-06-2016 05:50 PM

I iorn my glue basted quilt while it is on the table. Pick it up and start quilting. I like your quilt top.

quiltingcandy 03-06-2016 06:05 PM

Your quilt looks wonderful.

ctyankee 03-06-2016 06:32 PM

Love your scrappy quilt! I'm sure your granddaughter will love it!

Mariposa 03-06-2016 06:34 PM

A lovely scrappy!

KwiltyKahy 03-06-2016 06:40 PM

I won't baste any other way now, I love it.

That is the first thing I saw. I collect rabbit fabric.

Homespun 03-07-2016 05:08 AM

that's a great mix of fabrics.

citruscountyquilter 03-07-2016 05:13 AM

Once I tried glue basting I've never gone back to anything else. It is so easy. Right now I'm quilting a large quilt that is very heavy. I can't imagine how heavy it would be if it were pinned. I'm not sure I could wrestle it through the throat of my machine if it had pins. With glue, no problem. My machine has quilted a lot of quilts with glue basting with no ill affects to the machine.

QuiltnNan 03-07-2016 05:15 AM

cheerful quilt and congrats on the successful glue basting

redstilettos 03-07-2016 05:16 AM

I just tried glue basting for the first time this weekend, too! What a nice experience. If it hadn't been for this group, I would have completely used the wrong spray glue, so everyone has a round of applause in my book. :)

Karamarie 03-07-2016 05:19 AM

My favorite kind of quilts - squares. Fun looking at the different fabrics. Someone's going to be happy.

ManiacQuilter2 03-07-2016 05:52 AM

Hope this technique works out for you.

EmiliasNana 03-07-2016 05:58 AM

What a fun happy quilt for a 3 yr. old. She will have all sorts of fun looking at the lovely assortment of fabrics. Good job grandma.

Doggramma 03-07-2016 06:05 AM

I do the glue basting the same way. Your quilt is really fun and cheerful

JuneBillie 03-07-2016 03:57 PM

Your quilt turned out so nice, and great job on the glue basting.

Merrylin 03-07-2016 06:29 PM

It's a beautiful scrap quilt! I have never tried glue basting.

copycat 03-08-2016 03:33 AM

Do you glue baste both the top and the backing to the batting? Thank you!

sept97 03-08-2016 03:33 AM

you should use spray baste. Don't have to let it dry and it works great. I use 505 spray baste

Flowergurl 03-08-2016 04:33 AM

Thanks for all the kind words. :)
Copycat I spread out the batting on my table and centered the back fabric over the batting.
Then i clamped down one edge and folded the fabric back and we drizzled glue on the batting.
I spread the fabric back over the glued area and ironed it some. I let it sit for about 30 mins to dry a bit more.
I released the clamps and moved the unglued area to the table top and did the same thing again.
I let it sit for awhile ( an hour maybe? )with a fan blowing on it.
Then i pulled off the batting and fabric from the table.I used a plastic table and i'm glad as the glue stuck to
the table some. It should wipe off easily.
Then i repeated the process using the top this time and making sure plenty of backing fabric
was left on all sides and the top was centered on the table over the backing fabric.
I have a weird sensitive nose and i am afraid i wouldn't be able to tolerate the fumes from the spray basting,
otherwise i might consider it. Plus elmer's school glue is dirt cheap! ;)
I must say, i am very pleased with this way of basting.
I quilted half of it today and it went very smoothly.

kaylfordsollimo 03-08-2016 05:41 AM

I can see a bit of I Spy in this quilt. Very nice.

Wanabee Quiltin 03-08-2016 05:53 AM

Love your little quilt.

jamsbuying 03-08-2016 06:12 AM

Good luck. I have used Elmer's school glue, washable, on several quilts and have had good luck. I always wash quilts when finished quilting. Love the look. BTW, great quilt. Love all the colors.

Love your quilt! I like squares and scrappy. :)

Flowergurl, do you happen to have one of those flexible magnetic pieces on hand? I have several magnetic calendars from an advertiser which I use to spread the drizzled glue. No globs or thick lines. It really helps, and no messy fingers! (I would guess any stiff piece -- plastic or cardboard -- would also do.)

QM 03-08-2016 09:24 AM

A sweet quilt. A variant I have tried is to dilute the glue then paint it on with a large artist's brush

Doggramma 03-08-2016 10:26 AM

I forgot to mention before that when I use the glue, I iron it to dry it out as I go along. That way there's no waiting! I don't use poly batting though, so the batting might melt with poly

sewbizgirl 03-08-2016 10:38 AM

Didn't know you could do it that way... I always thought glue basting was done with the spray basting glue. That's what I have used and it's wonderful for holding layers together without pins!

Ranchwife 03-08-2016 11:55 AM

I dry iron the quilt to set the glue. It works great and you can work on the quilt immediately.

lynnie 03-08-2016 11:59 AM

nice and bright, good luck with the glue basting

Flowergurl 03-08-2016 12:13 PM

Thanks! :)
I bought a low loft poly batting, as this will be just a light throw for her to cover up with when she comes over.
The iron didn't hurt it at all.
If you are on the fence about glue basting, i say try it. Go with whatever works best for you.

leighway 03-08-2016 12:44 PM

If you like glue basting, you'll LOVE spray basting.. I use 505 and it's changed my whole outlook on finishing a quilt. I'll never ever pin or sew baste again!!

Claire123 03-08-2016 12:52 PM

I like the quilt top! Very nice work - everything matches perfectly. I use fabric glue stick for lots of things - zippers, paper piecing, basting. There is also a temporary basting spray sold at quilt shops and JoAnn's you might like. No drying time with the glue sticks or sprays.

The glue lines wash right out as long as you are using "school glue". My first glued project was way over glued and I thought it would not all wash out, but it did in just a regular laundry load, with half the soap. (I only used half the soap because it really was not "dirty". It worked fine.)

gramquilter2 03-08-2016 04:20 PM

It is going to be a pretty quilt when finished.
