Kyiav10,
That pattern of your icon is a must have. My husband collects Lionel trains and he would love to have a quilt with trains on it.....do you still have that pattern or tell me where I can get one...I sure would appreciate it...

I took several photos of the finished wall hanging because I thought I was taking blurry photos. But since all my photos come out the same way I came to the conclusion that the way I did the outside borders of the tumbling blocks or the colors or something I did causes it to appear to have movement. I know combining reds with certain colors can cause the appearance of movement. Not sure why it happened...but I guess someone may know?

PS...I used wood dowling w/wood beads screwed onto the end of the dowling & spray painted it a dark navy blue.

What size/degree diamond did you use and was this hand or machine pieced? How did you start this wallhanging - from the center and work out? I have never attempted anything like this but it is so striking I would like to give it a try. I would be handpiecing.

The diamonds within the 9 patch diamond are 1" finished. The degree of the diamond is 60 deg. I machine pieced everything. I made all the 9 patch diamonds in light, med & darks & then assembled the 9 patch diamonds into the 7 tumbling blocks. After I had all 7 tumbling blocks sewn together, then I pieced the surrounding diamonds in sections & finished by piecing the dark blue borders. I would do it differently if I was to attempt it again. I would try strip piecing I think. I'll wait awhile before attempting another one. LOL

Good Luck with yours! I'm sure tumbling block patterns have been done by hand successfully by others. My hands just wouldn't want to cooperate with me if I tried doing them by hand. I hope you'll share your work when you're done. :D

All those inset seams - aaarrrggghhh.

What a beautiful job. I did one for my honey (not even remotely as exciting as yours) but I understand the work that went into it. BIG thumbs up :!:

Wow that is awesome. It is almost three dimensional.

That's very cool, I love it!

Am I pleased this was bumped! I love it Pam - I've done a simple 3 patch tumbling block but never seen one like this, with 9 patchs. Add it to the list!

K x

BTW I would piece it over papers.

I really like it....wonderful quilt...

Wow, it is absolutely beautiful Pam! The outside borders give it a shadowy affect (on the picture), and really makes the blocks stand out. You really have to be proud.

I have the book "Big Book of Building Block Quilts" by Sara Nephew, but can't get enough nerve to try one. I envy everyone that can do these, they are so pretty!
