Twister experiment

1 Attachment(s)
I was trying an experiment that didn't work the way I wanted it to, however I got to looking at my layout and something clicked in my head. I substituted the center sections with pieces of other fabrics, and you can see that they now have some really interesting frames around them.

The piece isn't finished yet, but wanted to show you what I was working on today!

Quilter 65 09-14-2012 02:17 PM

Looks good to me to only be experimental. I haven't seen one done that way, but very pretty.

QuiltnNan 09-14-2012 03:05 PM

There are never mistakes, only happy accidents for new designs. It looks great.

QM 09-14-2012 05:00 PM

Looks very good. There is nothing 'mere' about your experament.

labeelady 09-14-2012 05:39 PM

Love it because it gives me an idea for my Great Grandson's 1st Birthday quilt. I have everything to make it too. Thanks for the idea : )

quilter824 09-15-2012 10:30 AM

katkat1946 09-15-2012 10:50 AM

WOW, I think you've opened up a whole new universe in the twister world!!! Clever!

sue1964 09-15-2012 10:54 AM

I like it with, a few fabric changes it would make a nice christmas quilt with the red and green.

LoisM 09-15-2012 11:01 AM

Don't you just love it when a design idea pops into your head? Very creative.

Easy, really. I cut 12 5" blocks of each fabric. Lets call them color 1 & color 2.
From the 12 blocks of color 1, make 3 4-patch blocks. Do the same with Color 2 blocks.

Then you sew 4-patch 1 to 4-patch 2. That's Row 1. Row 2 will be 4-patch 2 next to 4-patch 1.
Row 3 will be the same as Row 1.

Using your twister tool, cut out your squares and put them in the same order. You will have a solid block in the center of each section. Substitute a different 3-1/2" square for the center of each section so that the other blocks form a frame around the new block. Then sew your twister squares together and there you are!

Great new idea!

audsgirl 09-15-2012 05:02 PM

That's a clever solution to what may have been a problem. I like it!

bdship 09-15-2012 05:08 PM

promenades 09-16-2012 03:44 AM

quilt3311 09-16-2012 03:50 AM

What a cool idea!!! That has lots of possibilities, think photos in the centers? or wow this could really develop into some interesting quilts. thanks for sharing.

Cindy60545 09-16-2012 03:58 AM

definitely different. I can see this with Xmas cloth in the center squares to make a neet Xmas runner.

calicojoan 09-16-2012 05:42 AM

That is pretty cool. I see the center blocks with photos! What a great concept for a photo quilt!

Farm Quilter 09-16-2012 05:58 AM

Farmquilter, actually it isn't all that difficult. If you have the Lil Twister tool, it comes with instructions and a layout that is 4 blocks by 6 blocks. I used two different fabrics and made 3 4-patches of each color. Then layout your 4-patches in checkerboard fashion. The horizontal rows have 2 4-patches, one of each color. Then the second row the same but the colors are switched. The 3rd row is the same as the 1st row. Then add your 3" border all around.

When you cut the twister blocks, you will end up with what you see in the pics. Just take out the solid center blocks and replace with different fabrics or photos.

nstitches4u 09-16-2012 12:35 PM

How interesting, I really like your experiment. That's how we learn to make new pattern's. It is going to be so nice. I hope you will share with all of us again, when you are all done making it.
