Yes, the white block makes a big difference. It looks better and is more artistic than just sewing the strips. This is a good idea and much more attractive. Kudos.

I like them both, but especially the one with the white squares. It's amazing that a little variation like that makes it look like a much more complex design. It makes me want to hop right up and try it.
