UFO - Decisions, Decisions... opinions?

1 Attachment(s)
This is the first quilt I ever started. These are the first fabrics I bought, first rotary cutter experience, I sewed it on my aunt's machine. I didn't even have my own machine at the time! Now it's time to wrap up this log cabin UFO and finally piece it together... but there are so many options! I laid out the blocks on my bed because I am not lucky enough to have a quilt wall. This quilt is for my Dad who has a red white and blue bedroom.

HilaryK8 07-24-2012 07:41 AM

Sorry the color is off. The lighting wasn't great.

quiltsRfun 07-24-2012 07:45 AM

That's the problem with log cabin blocks - too many options for the layout. Personally, I like the diagonal, the star or the barn raising. No help, huh. :)

Ngeorgia 07-24-2012 07:47 AM

I like second row first two.

jcrow 07-24-2012 07:49 AM

I like the star or the barn raising. They are very nice and manly. But so is the diagonal.

ditto from me! you're going to have fun with finishing this one!!

icon17 07-24-2012 08:08 AM

WoW! this will look sooo great, I like the top/right :)

bearisgray 07-24-2012 08:11 AM

I like the top right, bottom left, and bottom middle layouts.

irishrose 07-24-2012 08:12 AM

I like the barn raising. That looks great for a first quilt - it looks great for any quilt.

feline fanatic 07-24-2012 08:30 AM

Barn raising (center bottom) is always a favorite of mine so I vote for that setting. Straight furrows (top center) is also very nice for a mans quilt. You also have the added interest of a very subtle zigzag forming in the dark furrow which adds additional visual interest.

Tartan 07-24-2012 08:33 AM

I vote for the star. Great looking blocks!

mom-6 07-24-2012 08:38 AM

I understand your dilemma! They all look great. My favorites are the top right, bottom left and bottom middle.

BLAP 07-24-2012 08:46 AM

Barn Raising is my favorite log cabin layout.

landers1 07-24-2012 09:22 AM

I like 1st row left , And 2nd row left the best

BettyJean 07-24-2012 10:38 AM

I like number 5.

blondeslave 07-24-2012 11:45 AM

Top right, bottom left are my favorites.

Diane007 07-24-2012 12:37 PM

go with what you like
but I vote 2 nd row # 1 or 2

quiltstringz 07-24-2012 12:41 PM

Barn raising is always my fallback as I just love it.

yonnikka 07-24-2012 01:17 PM

Have you considered letting your father decide? He may have a clear idea of which one he likes best. If he is far away, just print the page, even Black and white is okay, it will give him the idea.

Agreed, those are the three I like as well. I wish I knew the names of all the layouts.

liont 07-24-2012 01:30 PM

I like barn raising:)

stormwater 07-24-2012 01:38 PM

While I like the star, I agree with yonnika as to letting him decide. I've found in talking things over with my daughters, their input on the design has greatly added to their appreciation of the resulting quilt.

QuiltnNan 07-24-2012 02:52 PM

i vote for the star.

Make that three. Can't wait to see it finished.

Definitly the star, it will look awesome and very manly.

Rose_P 07-24-2012 03:52 PM

I like the star best, but maybe you should get your dad's opinion, unless it's going to be a surprise.

nannyrick 07-24-2012 04:17 PM

Great work!!!

HilaryK8 07-24-2012 06:57 PM

Thanks guys! I'm torn between the star and maybe the diagonal. I don't know. I'll go up and rearrange them one more time. Here's the issue... I wanted to back it with the little red squares that are in the middle of each log cabin. I got the fabric so long ago I can't find it anywhere. I don't even know who makes it. Think it will matter if I back it and bind it with fabric that is similar but completely unrelated?

He has no idea I'm doing this for him. We don't talk much. That's why I'm taking my time finishing it! haha.

DebbE 07-24-2012 07:07 PM

Without a doubt, the 2nd row, middle...but then its not going to be my quilt. Take into consideration your dad, what type of personality he has and how his home is. If he is a man who likes order, I'd go for the 1st row, far right or 2nd row, middle. If he's artistic or likes things mixed up a bit, I'd go for the 1st row, middle, or the 2nd row, left. Please show us when you finish -- can't wait to see it done!

That gets my vote, too... especially since your Dad's room is RWB. I can't wait to see this one done!

NanaCsews2 07-24-2012 07:13 PM

The barn raising gets my vote. How wonderful your first quilt will go to your father-what an honor for both of you!

Dolphyngyrl 07-24-2012 08:12 PM

top right or bottom left are my faves

Quilter 65 07-25-2012 05:00 PM

Whatever you choose, it will be lovely and a feeling of accomplishment to get it finished.

lollygagging 07-26-2012 03:10 PM

That's the joy/curse of the log cabin block-so many choices. But, each choice makes a wonderful top. Keep auditioning your layouts and one will finally sing to you. Thanks for sharing.

Phannie1 07-26-2012 03:18 PM

I like the first. I have seen the others but I have not seen that layout before. That is why I like it.

MYWR 07-26-2012 04:14 PM

top right for me too - but whatever you decide on - it will be great ! -you can always number them - place the numbers on folded paper in a bowl and have someone else pick one - and there is the lay out - not what about a border ?? think about a thin red border with black on either side - that worked for me !! (my daughter's guest bedroom) GOOD LUCK

alfosa421 07-26-2012 05:16 PM

I like the numberone and the number five layouts for a guy

IBQUILTIN 07-26-2012 09:27 PM

Toss them on the bed, straighten them out and sew em together. It will be great no matter what you do

bdship 07-26-2012 09:48 PM

My first choice is the star, bottom left or the top row, middle one.
